You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I'm handing down my old FS to my eldest (14yr old). I'm considering the changes needed to the shock/fork - Sag is dead easy however the Rebound and Compression are causing me some questions.
If the Compression and Rebound is currently set correctly for me - if I change the air pressure (Spring) do I also need to change the Compression/Rebound - I'm assuming I do but then I thought perhaps not.
If I do I'd appreciate any thoughts on the best way to set it up as he doesn't have the riding experience to set this up so I'll need to do it without riding it.
Yes - less rebound force (i.e. lower spring) needs less damping.
I'd start from scratch. Set sag first. Then in order for him to feel the difference in rebound & compression, session a section of trail and go from one extreme of setting to the other (only change one setting per run), he should then feel the difference & figure out what works best for him. As always, write down your settings, only make one change at a time, if you balls it all up - go back to a point of reference that was ok / or start again. It'll take a few rides to figure it out.

Could always take him somewhere with a nice section to play on and gradually go through things and finding out what feels better or worse. In essence though, less damping will be required, but you'll probably have to up the compression as he'll soon be faster than you anyway 😉
Cheers, make sense.
Although knowing how patient/impatient he is I imagine I'll be doing some guesswork. 😉
You can get to pretty good set of settings by bracketing.
If there are 10 clicks of rebound adjustment. Try 1 and 10.
If 1 feels better, try 1 and 5, if 5 feels better try 3 and 5. If neither is perfect try 4.
rebound easy to set using the kerb method then you can adjust from there. as for air pressure start off with enough for 30% F&R then follow and see what travel he gets and adjust pressure. That's how I set up Lewis on the scout.
Did this with my son - took him a few rides and then he started asking for things like slightly less air in the shock, slow down the rebound. So I reckon, even if they don't have the riding experience on a full sus at first, as they gain the experience... well, you know 🙂
