I'm looking to build up a new bike for the Mrs for general commuting and kid hauling. Will be flat bar'd with full mudguards and hamax. The lht or disc lht look good but so does the genesis tdf. Like the idea of the 26" wheels on the lht. Anybody have first hand experience of both?
Looked at the Troll and the Ogre? More adaptable than the LHT so you might get more use out of it as needs change but depends on yourselves and your interests. Think LHT is mainly drop bar? and only 26" in smaller sizes.
Think LHT is mainly drop bar? and only 26" in smaller sizes.
Can be built with any bar you like as long as you tailor fit, see plenty of flat bar Surlys as well as drops, and alt' bars.
Disc Trucker is available in 26in from 42cm->58cm, but 700C is only 56cm->64cm, so there is some truth to that comment but I'd hardly call 58cm small! Plenty of overlap in the middle where most will be, it's only the extremes where you're not able to pick the other wheelsize, and at the extremes it doesn't make sense to anyway.
The (non-disc) Long Haul Trucker has even more size options for 26in from, 42cm-62cm, still 56cm-64cm for 700c.
Any chance you can find shops/riders locally with them to let her have a go? she may find them equally good, or may have a strong preference for one over the other after trying them.
I have an Ogre for commuting and the rear facing dropouts are a real pain to get the wheel out if you have mudguards fitted and gears.
At the moment she rides a 15" ht MTB. I don't know of any shops near me that sell surly. (Peterborough) I think the disc lht will make a really nice ride. Have considered the ogre as it might have a alfine going on it.
I'm about 5'5".
Tried a 2015 TdF drop bar, a 2016 TdF flat bar and various CdF's.
Ended up with a 50cm 26 wheel Surly, as the geometry and fit seemed to have been thought out properly for a short arse.
No toe overlap either.
Very happy, just what I was after.
The frame on the Surly weighs approx the same as the CdF/TdF/Vagabond.
The Vagabond is a good option - weighs the same again but takes wider tyres than the CdF.
The nicest correctly sized 700c bike I could find was the Spa Tourer.
It's really intelligently designed, handles well, no toe overlap, beautifully balanced.
No discs though and doesn't take huge tyres.
Rusty, is your lht set up flat bar or dropped? I think the disc lht is what we will go for. Just want to be sure to get the sizing right.
Rusty...just to jog your memory like... 😉

Been meaning to do a 'New Bike' thread, it doesn't happen very often.I'll stick something up when I get a chance.
POSTED 1 MONTH AGO # REPORT-POST
It's a 50cm drop bar Disc Trucker.
Comfy all day with a 100mm stem and compact drops.
Lots of height adjustment built in at the front, standover is fine with 2" tyres.
Feels very stable on the tops with the bar slightly lower than the seat, I suspect the longish top tube would mean a flat bar conversion would work perfectly, possibly a slightly longer stem.
I intend to give it a go at some point, just for fun.
I'm so impressed with it, tbh.
The frame itself isn't that heavy and is surprisingly fun to ride.
Stable, but much lighter and quicker steering than I was anticipating.
It handles pretty much the same fully loaded as it does naked.
I promise I'll put up some pictures when I've taken some!
I have a Troll, love it to bits, use it for commuting/touring/everything. The horizontal drop outs are annoying though!
I have many a Surly, love them.......I had a Genesis once, for 3 weeks, not for me......
I've got a TdF.
Like you, Hamax on the back and (nappy!) bag on the front. I really like it. After zooming around for years on my MTB and road bike, this bike has really taught me the art of going slow and enjoying the ride. Love it.
Photo's a bit out of date - rear rack off as didn't fit with the child seat and mudguards added.

I always think the 62cm 26" LHT looks like a Cannondale Hooligan 🙂
The Mrs is 5ft4". 46cm looks like the best option?
Forgot to mention, Mrs S is currently waiting for the base model Spesh AWOL to arrive so she can have a sit on it.
Big wheels, but a long frame and short stem gives decent clearance.
The new one has decent gearing as standard and comes in a couple of pounds lighter than the Surly as a stock build.
Actually has a great spec and lots of owners on here really rate them.
Big tyres too.
They do an xs, so certainly worth considering.
If you want to hang on a week, if it fits and she likes it I might be able to give you a proper comparison.
If she lets me near it.
🙂
