Anybody got experience of running the Surly Knard 3.8" fatbike tyre tubeless? The instructions say it's not for tubeless, so does it work or will I die?

Are they the same instructions that have a section called "Installing a Tire - Tubeless Setup" ?

Not the easiest, depends on the rim and slackness of bead - might need some extra wraps of tape

No - the only mention of tubeless is to say "not recommended for tubeless applications".

No - the only mention of tubeless is to say "not recommended for tubeless applications".

Go to Surly website, select Surly Knard 3.8 and click on Tire Instructions link.

No mention of not recommended for tubeless applications but does include the generic

Installing a Tire — Tubeless Setup[/b]
We recommend using the Surly Tubeless Kit, instructions available here: http://surlybikes.com/parts/small_parts/Tubeless_Kit.

I read this as okay as I did for Dirt Wizards I am interested in so maybe they are the same. But misleading.

Most Surly tyres aren't tubeless ready, but can be made to work - I've run Larrys tubeless on Velocity Dually rims which uses the same carcass - extra tape and ghetto (split tube) worked for me. Also running some 29+ Knards this way for 2.5 years.

Thanks dovebiker, that removes my curiosity (and saves me £120) to try out Dirt Wizards as not into the extra tape, tubeless kits, split tube etc to make a tyre work.

I ran them tubeless for a year or so.

You need to inflate with tube/remove one bead/remove tube/put bead back on/lay wheel with loose bead down/compressor.

Thanks all - I'll give it a go.

I got an On One Floater 4" to work OK on the rim, but unfortunately that extra 0.2" just fouls the chain on bottom gear, so looks like it's got to be a 3.8" tyre.
