Keep umming and aahhing about changing tyres for the slop. I enjoy riding mud and wet fields ,slop etc but also connect it all together on devon back lanes. I tried Nate's ( 120 tpi) and found them noisy and rather "wooden " in feel so am considering Edna's both ends if any better or perhaps Edna rear, Bud front ? Don't want to go monster on the rear as mud clearance and chain contamination would be problematic .
Otherwise ...should I try Nate's again ?
Thanks in advance
Bill
3 hours on jumbo jims yesterday.
Some exciting moments.
Hi Bill,
I used both on my Wednesday 120tpi and tubeless and found the Edna's a better all-round tyre for year round Hampshire/Dorset riding. I tried Minion DHF and DHR but found them draggier than both Surly options.
Hope this helps,
George.
45north Van helga in 4.00 is always fab in grim conditions. Maxxis Minion Fatties are also great if they clear your frame and ride mode technical and knadgery stuff
Currently Running JJ's too.. ok in some places but no traction in others as to be expected. Having to ride carefully to avoid front end wipe outs ..even at 5/6 psi .
The 4" minions FBF / FBR are bloomin' awesome for traction & grip, but yeah, very energy sapping. TBH with the state of the ground around here right now nothing at all is easy to pedal & the fat bike is lingering on its hook. Hopefully the rain will sod off for a few days to let things drain.
I run a Bud front and Edna rear on my Puffin.
With the exception of perhaps swapping to BFLs in the height of summer they stay on all year round.
It is either sandy or quick clearing mud where I typically ride and I could't really want for a better pairing.
Side note ..... I started with 120tpi Nates front and rear and never really got on with them.Â
I just run JJs all year. However, I was riding with Ilya Rudkin (North 3rd Media) a couple of weeks ago and he was showing off by riding up icy paths on his studded tyres.Â
A colleague saw my phone at lunchtime and from the thread titles "Surly Edna..." and "Big Betty...." wondered exactly what i was browsing on HM Gov wifi
Bud front and Edna rear here for a mix of slop and roads. Bud grips (corners) in the slop better than anything else and is pretty fast rolling too. Pal has one to sell (he tried front and rear Bud pair) if you can't source one. Edna a good alrounder for the rear in my opinion.
P.S. Bud is a beast to seal tubeless, very floppy and a bit oversized. Not a problem once up or during rides however. Get a Bud up front for winter, you'll love it.
"very floppy and a bit oversized. Not a problem once up or during rides however."
I know that feeling !
