A woman has just told me that cycling is bad for the environment because cyclists ride three abreast in the middle of the road causing queues of traffic!
I couldn't bring myself to argue with her. 🙁

She's right, tho.

Cyclists should stick to one abreast, as anything else is just selfish.

Surely you need at least 2 people to be abreast? So you can't be one abreast.

If I was one of the STW "in crowd" I might be taken slightly more seriously. I thought you might be more concerned about the shit attitudes towards cycling in the UK.

I can't speak for everyone, but I am concerned, however arguing about it on here hasn't made it better yet and I doubt it will now! 🙄

OP made the right decision

It's taken me 40 years, but I've finally worked out that arguing is pointless, completely and utterly pointless, even if you produced every proven fact, a bus load of experts to back you up and a priest and a rabbi to confirm your honesty you will never, ever, not once convince anyone to admit they're wrong in an argument.

Few people will genuinely debate with you, of those wonderful few, a tiny proportion will do so with a mind to accept they may get the chance to learn something new rather than just win the fight.

Everyone else is just in it for a verbal fight and the only way you can lose one of those is by accepting you're wrong so no one ever does.

Not sure about the "in crowd" bit, I spend far too much time riding my bike to be one of them. I reckon you got unlucky with a flippant response, rose to it, and are now having your leg pulled.

I would also reckon everyone is pretty aware of the shit attitudes you refer to - I had a punishment pass yesterday evening on a local b-Road, some tosspot went past me at about 85 less than halfway over the centre line because he has a small cock. Not much I can do about other than shout some anglo-Saxon and make a gesture.

Hey Vicky, this forum is a world of piss taking and fun and information and compassion and tosspots and sh!t. There are tides of wisdom and stupidity and generally wrongness. I've run aground on a few of them as you just have .
I've met so many seeming;y nice people who are total asswipes towards bikes that when I found last week that my brother was one of them I almost didnt feel shocked. 😳

I suppose I'm just being overly sensitive because I'm sick of the disgraceful attitude of some motorists. I had 2 incidents in the space of 5 miles yesterday. I ride my bike a lot and I'm frustrated and tired with idiots.

I am concerned about it, but as expressed above, it's not good for my blood pressure to be too concerned about it, because there's little I can do to change them.

I couldn't bring myself to argue with her.

Good choice - the only better option is to take the piss, but you have to be well prepared to do that.

As for "in" crowd, I'm not sure if Jamie is taking the piss, but I'd certainly consider you to be one of the core members of this forum - I certainly recognise your username and expect sensible and useful contributions when I see it. But I'm only replying to this thread because you seem to be upset about the lack of sensible replies - my feeling towards the OP is a bit meh for reasons already mentioned. Clearly the woman is wrong, but why waste your time arguing with idiots? (cue lots of piss take comebacks 😉 )

Technically she could be right. Revving the nuts out of first gear while impatiently waiting inches away from the rear wheel and then driving around and off erratically would increase exhaust emissions and corntribute to air pollution.

I once got mistaken for him at an M5 service station by a bunch of old ladies on a coach trip (I blame my dodgy flowery shirt choices). The coach driver said he knew is wasn't him but could I just have my photo taken with the old dears to 'make their day'.
I'd love to see the reactions of their loved ones when they went home and showed their pics of their great day out.

I'm sure JSP used to have better views than this.

I'm assuming as her TV presence dwindles her voice has to get louder and more irrational.

My world is in pieces at such cynicism. You mean some of these so-called commentators who have never really done anything but start on the periphery of various 'scenes' then become a 'celebrity opinion former' use controversy and provocation to remain in the public eye?

Surely not?

Rule 66
You should
never ride more than two abreast, and ride in single file on narrow or busy roads and when riding round bends

Note, in the highway code, "should" entries are merely advisory and "must" entries are what make up the foundation of traffic law.

In this case, the specific rule regarding cyclists riding more than two abreast is little more than an advisory.

And all that's moot given the idiot was talking rubbish anyway. The projection of car drivers is pretty impressive.
"It's not me, who fills my car with petrol and burns it to get around, who causes air pollution, it's those pesky cyclists".

"All that congestion at rush hour, where thousands and thousands of cars clog up the roads, that's caused by three cyclists somewhere up ahead, it's the only possible cause".

I even saw, with reference to one of the wiggle rides on the New forest "What if there's an emergency, how would a fire engine or ambulance get down a road that had lots of cyclists on it?"
Probably with less difficulty than on a road full of cars, good job that never happens eh...

LOL there is no 'in crowd' on here! Just a bunch of middle aged, bitter, sanctimonious twonks. You will find neither wisdom or sympathy.

Ok, I had a sense of humour failure yesterday!

This from bails made me laugh just now:

"All that congestion at rush hour, where thousands and thousands of cars clog up the roads, that's caused by three cyclists somewhere up ahead, it's the only possible cause".

I happily caused a queue of traffic yesterday following a roadie from Langdale towards Windermere doing about 10mph. He seemed to be enjoying himself and I had some good tunes on. Everyone already hated us because he was a cyclist and I drive a transporter.
