[Closed] Superstar Switch hub goes stiff when I tighten the 12mm bolt

I've got a new set of Superstar Switch Evo wheels, in 150mm x 12mm guise. (Yep, the same ones that I couldn't get the cassette off)

For some reason, when I fit the wheel to my frame, the hub goes really stiff and draggy as soon as the 12mm bolt gets even close to finger tight.

I've emailed Superstar for the service instructions. While I wait, anyone got any ideas what would be causing it? Overtightened axle? Dodgy bearings?

K

Have you missed out an internal spacer? Thus when you tighten it up, the hub gets clamped.

Common issue when replacing the bearings in Hope hubs (might be relevant)

Hmm, that could explain it. As far as I know they're brand new - at least that's what the guy who sold them to me said. I guess I'll find out once I get the instructions and take it apart

Sounds like he replaced the bearings (or at least took it apart), and forgot to install an internal spacer (if such thing exists)

Ominously, such a spacer actually exists! http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=51&products_id=555&osCsid=mn6nf23kvuv9rbechhljqreic3

I have the same issue but I have checked the drawings and don't seem to be missing a spacer.

Kevin i don't think the issue is that spacer.

After having this problem with Hopes its probably one of three things:
- missing spacer
- bearings either side of the main part of the hub body have been pressed in too firmly and are 'crushing' the axle although looking at the exploded diagram, the SS axles aren't stepped like the Hope ones are.
- goosed bearing(s)

Makes sense, but I'm curious about what philfive says that he has the same problem and has checked the spacer is in place.

If thats the case then the answer is simply, Superstar (although I do like their stuff - just never tried their wheels).

The spacer is there but I will check again 🙂 I think it's one of the smaller spacers.

Right, so in all probability, there's something missing somewhere. Anyone got the service instructions for them? Not sure why SS don't put them online.
