Contemplating getting some wheels whilst the sale is on at Superstar.

27.5 for a Stanton Switchback. I'm not light and my wheels tend to get a bit of a battering. I know I should look at technique etc but I'm after a decently strong rim to build into a reliable wheelset.

Options are DT Swiss E512 (had some ex 5.1 ins but 1 side partially folded in on its self and the other cracked but from the sounds of things they have improved the alloy that they use), stans flow EX (the older model) or Mavic EN 827. Also their own rims such as the 25 or 27 mm offerings but they seem pretty heavy. That said I would go for dent resistance over weight.

Im also after something which will go up tubeless fairly easily.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Tactics have been great for me. Not on-trend wide but I can't say I notice any difference between them and my super wide Spesh rims

Tactics are good, strong and light, not on trend with widths though if that bothers you, I had them on my Trance and they worked fine with everything up to 2.5 wide tyres, just recently noticed a small dent in the rim but I think that was my ham fisted attempt to lever off a tyre that had been on the rim for over a year and seemed to have welded itself on there!

Have since replaced with DHX-pro rims by superstar, they're tougher, wider (30mm internal/36mm external) and a bit heavier but seeing as the bike is used solely for racing and uplift days reliability is my priority.

I've had Tactics before, good rim but did dent quite easily.

I've actually got a set of Superstar Switch Ultra/Ryde Edge 28 wheels for sale in the classifieds at the moment.

I trashed the rear rim so it needs replacing, Superstar will replace under crash replacement scheme though.

If your interested I can get SS to rebuild the rear with a E512 or any other rim that is listed (within reason!)

Similarly looking at Superstar's builds on offer and those DT rims.

Generally been looking at DT rims from various places. Confused though between AM and Enduro rims. Sure I know the difference in disciplines but the terrain is fairly much the same? What difference does it make to the rim choice? e.g. DT list E512 as Enduro, M442 as AM. The M442 is slightly lighter, and the E512 is slightly wider. Real world difference? Does a fractionally wider and fractionally heavier rim make it unsuitable for "All Mountain" and vice versa for "Enduro"? 😕 😀

Anyway, just need something that will pedal well but cope with uplift days, bit of Alps even (I'm into big jumps and drops though), preferably with a DT hub as really like them, and considering DT rims as had many recommend them. Just so many options though.

Though I may just go with Stans Flow. Got Arch EX on another bike and they're tough as, though not taken them to BPW etc.

Yeah I'm half tempted with stans flow as I'm sure they will be super easy to get up tubeless. But then I know when I used old magics years ago they were very tough D521 I think they were.

I had Mavic EN521 on various HTs before going FS, narrow at 21mm compared to modern offerings but cheap and virtually indestructible....i'd forgotten about those, well worth a look, as are EX823 rims, wider again and built for DH and freeride I believe.

Today's DTs are nothing like the old cottage cheese stuff btw. Old FLow Ex is a little bit delicate ime, I killed mine in fairly short order- admittedly on the DH bike so a bit out of their paygrade but the old Flows stood up to it better. The very low rim means bends and dents that wouldn't bother most rims are trouble for the Flow Ex, basically. If the price is right I'd still consider them but they're outclassed by the newer DTs and WTBs.

I would avoid Ryde Edge rims. Mine dented so easily it's untrue (superstars own AMX) were tougher. They were also a nightmare to fit tyres too.

I do like the wtbs that I have had previously. Held the tyre well and seemed very strong but superstar don't have them.

I'm thinking maybe just go with the DT FR 570. It's 60 odd grams heavier and £20 than E512 but welded and should hold up well.

Should look at myself for weight loss before the 60g on a wheel!

I have Sentinels (skinny 21mm inside) on Switch hubs and love them. 26" though.

Custom builder on superstar have Flow Mk3 rims option.

E512 vs FR570 vs Flow Mk 3?

(or even M442 in the mix)

How do the Mk3 Flow rate vs Flow EX? Though other than Northwind 😉 not heard much issue with Flow EX amongst people I know.

FR570 seem OTT for me. Marked as DH rims and my DHing is very infrequent. Odd trip to Aston, Rogate maybe. BPW is a different beast to DH really also. Plus I don't ride like a DHer. I bimble down most trails 😀

Are those DT considered "old" DT?

Never a nightmare to fit tyres to, I had both Specialized (Butcher Grid) and Maxxis (HR2) go on without too
much fuss and inflate with just a track pump. I only dented the rear when I switched to the Maxxis tyres due to the flimsy sidewalls on the EXO casing and not running enough pressure(and also bad line choice....)

Anyone got the XX27 rims? Im looking at some in 29er guise to put mud tyres on. Any experiences of them?

They definitely were a nightmare to fit tyres to IMO. I should know how difficult it was compared to other rims.
