I'm looking build up a set of wheels using the Superstar wheel building service.

I'm looking for rim recommendations to replacee my Mavic XM719 rims; Superstar do have XM719s available but I've had some cracking around the eyelets of mine so fancy a change.

I don't know anything about Stan's rim but won't be going tubeless.

Are Superstar's own rims any good (I've now idea who makes them).

Superstar rims are good, and plenty of choice for rim width 21,23, or 25mm tubeless ready too if you change your mind. 21 or 23mm will give you a slightly fatter tyre profle for no weight gain - worth a go.

Thanks, I'm trying to decide which rim to go for. I do a mixture of road, cross country and bumbling about on rocky bridleways. It's pretty gentle stuff but I'm a bit of a big biffer (16 stone plus) and since I don't race I've gone for strength over weight.

I've been riding the same Mavix XM719 for about 7 years and (although they've finally started to crack) they've never needed truing once; I'm not sure if this means I've got things spot on or am over built.

On the Superstar front the T-Ready T21 (trail) is closest to the XM719 in weight whilst the Tactic is described as an all mountain rim and about 50grams lighter.

Any thoughts on which would be best - or other suggestions for the Superstar wheel build website? Lighter is obviously nice but I'd rather durability.

Any thoughts? I'm leaning towards a Tactic or T-Ready TR1.

I have Tactics, nice and light, 23mm internal width, strong enough for hardtail use with my 14 stone on them.
I'd happily recommend them.

ive had a go at setting up tubless conti tryes on both tactics and the ds25.
The tactic is a better built rim, and im pretty sure it was slightly easier to set up tubeless. but ive given my ds25's alot of abuse so far and they are great for the price.

I've just got some Tactics, and they seem a good comprimise of weight, width amd strength..

I've got a wierd memory- I never forget rims or building something up.

I received a handbuilt wheel this week from SS- it has the Tactic rim and it reminded me EXACTLY of the Dt4.1 and DT5.1 rims that I had a few years ago. In every way. Thats not a compliment. I've not ridden it yet but the feel/depth, fitting a tyre, seating the tyre -etc etc. It all feels the same. Its probably not the 4.1 or the 5.1 but it bloody feels like it.

I've got the Tactics and the DS25.

The former I think are more "trail" than "all mountain", the latter are proper AM rims. I'd say go for the Tactic but then noticed your weight.

But still, if the 719 was fine then they might be OK too.

Maybe the EX23 would be a good middle ground?
