I need a new chainring for my M9020 cranks. The genuine shimano are more than double the price of the superstar so wondered if they are worth the extra? Is anyone using the superstar chainring to give me some feedback? £30 seems like a bargain if they are any good.
I considered one for my M9020 cranks but decided on a OneUp instead as they come with bespoke chainring bolts so no need to use the Shimano covers / nuts. Quality of finish on the OneUp is very good and it would have been a bit cheaper if I’d spotted that you can buy directly fom their website in $.
If you want a 36T I still have the original Shimano chainring from my M9020 (but not narrow wide).
I’ve used Superstar chainrings on other Shimano cranks and they’ve been fine.
Thanks mda, I'll take a look at Oneup. Its the fitting that concerns me due to the bolts and caps on the m9020 crank. I want to make sure it will fit before I buy. I need a 32T but thanks for the offer.
The Gamut ttr ring for M9000/9020 is tapped so you use the stock bolts without the caps.
I've gone for the superstar. £30 and made in the UK. I'll put an update on here when I get it to review fit, quality and performance.
Update time. The superstar ring arrived and fitted the cranks with a nice snug grip on the lugs. Weight was 47g which is lighter than my shimano ring and the narrow wide profile looks secure in the chain links.
Went for a ride in Dalby this morning on a mix of red and blue trails and the drivetrain was perfection. No dropped chain or skipping gears and the shifts felt crisp and fast. In summary I would recommend this chainring to anyone looking for a replacement for their M9000/9020 cranks as at £30 and made in the UK you can't go wrong.
I’ve had one for a while and for 1x they are great. Slightly stepped in so I found they gave a much better chain line
I find a new* chainring is better than an old one .... erm sorry for stating the obvious but what I mean is the superstar might be a bit less durable (or not) but if I can afford to change twice as often then I reckon that's better.
If you use the Superstar discounts it can get closer to 3:1 ...
The other advantage is you can spec a couple of sizes... and change the chainring for different riding. i.e. 2x your usual and then one 2-4 teeth bigger/smaller. (As a less frequent change you can add an extra link to the chain)
All that said ... I don't own anything above XT....(and my cranks are all 68x, 78x or Saint) ? If I was paying for XTR ... perhaps I'd stick OEM???
*I had one Superstar chainring where the anodising (or something) seemed a bit off.... to be honest not sure what but it needed 1 ride to bed in. It was a sticky day and it got full of sand/clay and kept coming off but I kept washing it for a ride and after a few miles it was woring perfectly. (Worth thinking about before fitting a new one for a race)
