Any ideas of a decent quality 30/46 chainset, running Ultegra at moment, not sure if any would be compatible with bb.
There's a used FSA Gossamer 48/32 on eBay for £50 BIN complete with threaded BB
I think they’re discontinued now, but I have a RaceFace Cadence CX on my CX hybrid. 46/36, but it will take smaller rings.
Whats wrong with Ultegra? They do a CX 46/36 you could change the inner ring.
Didn’t think you could go smaller than 34 teeth on the 110 pad compact.
Sugino chainsets are compatible with Shimano BBs.
I have OX-901D 44/30 using their ceramic BB and I'm quite happy with it. Other priced chainsets are available.
Absolute black or someone make ickle wobbly road rings that fit normal pcd cranksets
FSA do then at 3 prices points. They aren't hard to find. The cheapest is square taper.
But I think I want 28 40 do I'll do the spa cycles 2 inner rings if a triple. Had any one tried one? Do they shift ok?
The old boys in CTC land refer to these sort of chainset as an "alpine double". You may find s from more options searching for that, or browsing SJS or Spa cycles.
Not get the ratios that via cassette range change?
Have a look at the CTC/CUK forum. They are always on about alpine doubles there.
If the Q factor isn't an issue why not a MTB double. Thats what I use on the gravel and it allows a nice small cassette. I use a 11-25 but we don't have much in the way of hills in the FoD

Then you have a bigger-than-you-wanted chainring (heavier) and need a bigger-than-you-wanted cassette (heavier, gappier) and might need a different mech (spendier) or goat link or similar (bodgier).
Especially for big mountains, a smaller than compact size makes a lot of sense.
Or a triple, for loaded touring. Going slow is much faster than not going at all!
Edit: I’m on 50/34 and 11-34 11sp. Worked for me all round the alps and Pyrenees, but I realise everyone has different needs.
Makes sense for most people. When was the last time you were blasting down a hill on top gear peddling like a loon at 60+kph? Wasted range at the top end so may as well trade that in for lower range and get the cadence and more efficient peddling on the steeps. And having a bail out granny gear to go to if you do overstretch yourself on a big day in the Alps is handy just in case.
Also for most people it improves the chain line in normal flat riding.
Absolute black are good. Absolute black chainrings on a 105 crank weighs in a gnats todger less than Dura Ace crank.
I have the Absolute Black 46/30 setup on my gravel bike, they work with 105 or Ultegra 4 arm cranks and are oval. On the rear I have an 11/40 11 speed cassette with a wolftooth roadlink and long cage 105 mech. This was specifically for the 25% gravel uphills on the Turin Nice Rally as the bike was loaded for bikepacking. Made it up everything on the route though it was touch and go in places due to the length of the steep sections. I intended to take the cassette off post event but tbh it works where I live in Spain as well so it's still on. I think it's the perfect solution to riding big mountains loaded up, without a barbag you may struggle to keep the front wheel on the ground.
