I am trying to install two Sunrace wide-range cassettes on two bikes.
Cassettes are: CSMX3 10sp 11-46t
One bike has a Shimano XT M786 Shadow+ rear mech, the other an older XT mech, both have the standard Shimano goat-link.
On both bikes the cable clamp of the mech hits the large cog on the cassette, whatever the orientation of the mech around it's travel.
What's the solution to this? Is there a long-reach goat-link to replace the stock Shimano one? Or do I need to replace the mechs on both bikes?
I asked Sunrace about this, their reply:
"Both derailleurs are not capable of handling the 46T…
A goat link is not something standard from Shimano as they would want you to buy a rear derailleur that does accept the 46T, being XT RD M8000 SGS. Or RD-M7000 11 speed SGS (but used as a 10 speed)"
i have a 11-42 sunrace cassette and xtr 10spd rear mech and reversed the b-limit screw to get it to work, it works fine and clears where it should so you either need a longer b-limit screw or an actual 'goatlink' from eighteen bikes (only ones selling them when i looked). but not sure if this works with the 46t cassette have a look on the internet...
or change the mechs?
If you do go the 'goatlink' path, there is also the Pilo S10 that does the same thing and is sometimes lower cost.
I went for 42T after looking around the internet a bit - looks like they recommend 40T for XT mech, but you can get away with B tension messing about on 42T, I didn't fancy more hassle than that.
I'm sure claims from others re. 11 speed rear mechs are true, but I had a 10s waiting.
