I got some old wheels off a guy at work. They're 27.5 rims off an old low-end bike that was just abandoned outside for years. I figured I could use them as spare wheels for my commuter bike. Unfortunately, the back wheel seems to have a 7 speed freewheel, not a cassette. I have no experience with freewheels and was wondering if it's possible to convert it to a 9 speed, or even 8 speed. I have another old wheel with a Shimano hub, so the other option is to rebuild the rim onto that, but if I have to buy spokes, I might as well buy a decent rim at the same time, and I might as well buy a new hub and be done with it.
A standard Shimano lockring tool fits, but it seems to be on bastard tight and I gave up trying to get it off.
