So my current XT set up is finally giving up on me. Bike is a Whyte T129RS. Thinking about a Sunrace 11-50 cassette to go with new chain and an oval chain ring, plus replacing the Raceface BB which was made of cheese!

So any thoughts on the 11 speed cassette and the oval? Have thought about the 12 speed but new shifter and rear mech blows the budget!

Will your current XT Mech go to 50t? I got mine out to 46t but further might require a bit of tweaking/goatlink etc.

The review on here suggests that the medium cage one is fine and should work well. Wondering about BB compatibility with the Raceface cranks as well.

XT M8000 mech is only rated to 42t officially.

I've managed to get 46 working on a mate's bike but 50 would have been a push.

The Sunrace cassettes are decent though, although the red spider on the MX8 is questioanble...

Oval is a defo though.

Any thoughts on BB - thinking hope or Praxis as assuming both work with 30mm spindle.

Cheapish option here - GX Shifter/mech and a 12s NX cassette which will fit your existing freehub

I've Sunrace cassettes and Absolute Black oval chainrings on two of my bikes and both work without problem. As @reggiegasket notes you might have a bit of fettling to do to get the mech to work with the 50T.

Yep, Raceface BBs are on a par with SRAM GXP, i.e. rubbish! I've not used Praxis but the Hope should be more than good enough, I'm assuming that the BB shell is threaded not PF.

I have heard that Shimano mechs don't go well with oval chain rings because they use a friction clutch not a fluid clutch like sram. Someone might be able to corobroborobobrate this

Rotor BBs are decent, and you can often find some pretty good deals on them.

Hi,

I’m using:

Shimano XT M8000 GS Shadow+ 11 Speed Rear Mech
XT M8000 shifter
MT800 Bottom Bracket
XT M785 Cranks
Blackspire Snaggletooth oval chain ring, 32t
Sunrace CSMX8 11-46 (Shimano freehub)
SRAM NX PC-1110 chain

All works just fine. No issues with the clutch being on, no chain slap, no chain dropping etc. Good shifting is a bit more sensitive to the drive train being kept clean than my old 2x – but not so much it ever causes an issue.

Hope that helps

I think your clutch is slipping 🙂

Could explain why I've never got on with Shimano clutch mechs though. I normally just have mine switched off and run a chain guide instead.

I use an 11/46 Sunrace cassette, Works Components oval ring on an M8000 mech & XTR BB. All works a treat & represents good value for money in my opinion.

RE: Shimano clutch with an oval ring = maybe once a year mine starts to squeak, I just service the clutch as per Shimano tech doc and it all works fine again.

Friend of mine was using 11/50 11speed Sunrace cassette with SLX mech and shifter.

No goat links, all was working fine.

Bike sold now and under new rider clocking more miles fine.

That was Banshee Spitty.

I have 12 speed set-up with oval chainring. Haven't seen any real benefits, once it will wear out will be back on standard chainring as they are cheaper.

Cheers!
I.

A load of bollollolocks! I've used SLX and XT clutch mechs with oval chainrings for five years and not had a problem or a dropped chain.

I too have an 11-50 SR cassette, 32t Ab Black chainring, XT rear mech and no issues on a hardtail fwiw.
