Does anyone know if this: https://www.spacycles.co.uk/m2b0s150p4475/SUNRACE-9spd-M990
will work with a long cage 9 speed Shimano mech? Or might some sort of further mod be necessary?
Ta.
Not sure but I have exactly that cassette sat here, never used apart from fitting it to a wheel then got a deal on an NX drivetrain so took it back off.Lol
I've got a "knock off" eBay goatlink for it too.
I've got the black cassette.
Just about to try an Amazon special 11-40 9 speed on a Shimano Altus mech on one of my boys bikes. If I get it done in next couple of days will post back.
9 speed? Fancy?
I just ordered and 11-40 8 speed. Its coming with a knock off goatlink.
It will work without goatlink but it will be better with. Been running 9spd 11-40 on a couple of bikes for a few years now. Deore mechs on mine.
That's the info I was after smokey_jo.
Thanks everyone.
Basically I'm a tight arse and haven't done so much cycling for a few years so have a load of 9-speed stuff to use up before I join the modern world. Plus, nowt wrong with 9-speed!
I've run the 8 speed 11-40 with a claris rear mech and a knock off goat link when I've been pulling a trailer without any issues.
If you can find an 11-42 i'd run one of those with a goatlink and a 30t narrow/wide up front. 30 front 40 rear leaves me wanting on a few occasions
Presuming you don’t have a clutch mech for your 9 speed - do you drop many chains? Is a narrow wide alone enough for chain retention?
It has to be very rocky and fast for my chain to drop (this happens less and less as I descend fully into middle age). I don't think you can get clutch mechs in 9 speed unless there's a new acera or altus one been released in the last year or so.
You might get a bit more noise/chainslap from a non clutch mech, but the narrow/wide ring is the part that actually stops the chain from dropping off.
Not what you asked really but I have a sunrace 11-40 9 speed on my cx with a short cage road mech and RoadLink, nw front and it works faultlessly. Never dropped chain
Going 1*9 on my mtb and going to use an 11-46 9 speed and a sunrace mech extension (road link copy). It’s had an 11-36 on back but it’s not enough for me
Fab! Means I can effectively 1x my daughters bike with a wide range 9 speed cassette
I put a narrow/wide chainring on having never used one before and it is quite clearly some sort of black magic. I went from dropping the chain quite regularly to zero instances yesterday in a 68 mile mostly off-road ride with plenty of fast, rough descents.
I have a Chinese e bay 11-40 cassette with a 36/22 double chainset and a Shimano Saint derailler on my daughter's hardtail works in all gears without any problems,no goatlink required.
Currently on a 9 speed X9 Grip Shift and SRAM X9 rear mech on the old hardtail. Would I need the knock off goatlink too if I got this? I seem to remember SRAM were better on the larger range cassettes.
i`ve been running a 42t 9sp sunrace an xt clutch mech (with a 6mm spacer) and 9sp sram shifter for about 8 months now. no goat link, 32 tooth chainring
not as smooth as a 10sp shimano but cheaper as i had it all bar the cassette.
Just thought I'd report back in case OP is still looking.
The Amazon 9 speed 11-40 cassette and sram chain are now installed on youngest son's bike along with the Altus mech. Aligned the mech hanger and put it all together.
B screw adjustment was needed but no goat link.
Not ridden in anger yet but shifting looks ok, finish on cassette pretty decent and just over an hour all in to straighten the hanger, measure chain, fit cassette and tune up including the bloody awful SRAM power link misbehaving.
Fitted my cassette and chain at the weekend, but then had to order the £6 rear mech extender as my SRAM set up wouldn't go onto the largest cog even with the B adjuster all the way in. Looks a nice cassette though, so for £40 for cassette and chain (delivery too from Spa Cycles - quick delivery, so would recommend) I'm quite pleased...subject to the extender link working.
