I’m looking to upgrade from 10spd shimano to 12 speed, when my current drivetrain bites the dust.

My rear wheel is a 135mm DT240s (star ratchet) with a normal shimano freehub, With qr end caps.

Looks like the simplest option is a Sunrace cassette, I like the look of the MZ903, but I can’t find stock anywhere 🙁

Just wondering what my options are?

Personally, I'd consider 11sp or even sticking with 10sp instead.

You can get nice wide range cassettes in both now, the rear mechs don't dangle so low and my impression is they were more durable and easier to set up (I tried 12 speed for a bit, but went back).

I had one on my RipMo for a bit while I was waiting for a new rear wheel with microspline. It is a bit heavier than a Shimano SLX and the shifting isn't as crisp. It works fine tho.

It's not sat in the spares box. As all the bikes are 12 speed now, I doubt I'll use it again but it served its purpose. Got mine from Bike-Discount I think. If you want to try a not-very-worn one for a few quid, let me know.

I get @chakaping's point re: 11 v 12 speed but I do think 12 speed is a lot cleaner shifting (if it's all shimano) and lighter too. The mechs tho are definitely low hanging fruit!

@Alex - thanks for the offer, but I don’t have microspline, I’m unsure if my hub is upgradable to microspline?

But the thread is literally about a Sunrace cassette.

I definitely haven’t hoarded many of them....

Picked up one from Amazon and another from a Dublin based ebayer

Unless we're talking a decades old 240, then yep, you can add a microspline driver body.
It would require you to go to a 12mm rear axle though. (edit correction 12spd QR HWYABL00S8810S)
Some bikes (my past Scotts of the 2010-2016 vintage came with dropouts for qr, 10mm thru and 12mm axles

If you went to an XD body, you could keep the qr. That opens up 10t sprockets from sunrace too (HWYAAX00S3115S)

Perhaps also worth considering going to 10mm end caps and a thru axle over the 5mm qr.
The beauty of ST swiss hubs!

@futonrivercrossing - it's a 12 speed cassette that fits on a standard Shimano 10/11 speed freehub.

@chakaping - sure but I was responding to your suggestion of sticking to 11 speed. My experience is 12 speed is worth the upgrade, hence my comment.

I meant I'd stick to 11sp in preference to a 12sp Sunrace cassette.

@BearBack

My 240 is at a guess 12 years old, still going strong! It has the ratchet system. My frame is only suited to 10mm end caps though, hence its QR skewers.
