So has anyone used either of the above?
Got a voucher for £10 off at CRC and thinking of replacing my XT 11-42t with a wider range.
Like the look of the sunrace 11-46 as it has more even steps between the ratios.
What's the difference between the MX8 and MS8 - CRC only have the MS8 in 11-46 in stock.
Check the weights, but I think MS8 is heavier.
I have both and can't fault either tbh. . Bought from ze Germans worked out cheaper than crc as I added a few other bits too.
Son uses the 11-46 10spd with a 30t ring up front
I use the 11-50 with 32t ring for reference
Thanks, what rear mech are you using with the 50t?
How do you find the jump from the 42 to 50 sprocket?
I've got the 10spd 11-42t on my Mega and really like it.
I find it good tbh.. Using it with new slx medium cage mech and slx shifter
Actually just changed from the 10spd 11-42 that you're using.. You won't be disapointed if you already use sunrace cassettes.
I changed because I trialled a 26&28t chainring with the 11-42 cassette to try and replicate the easy gear of 32-50 but although it did work fine.. I did find that I didn't travel anywhere fast. Now, other than a slight weight penalty I have the best of both worlds.
I payed about 130 euros for the mech, shifter, cassette and sram 11spd chain from bike discount the other week if it helps
My son who also had the 11-42 was given my old xt 10spd setup (mech and shifter) and I grabbed an 11-46 for him as he uses a 30t ring up front.
So there's no real need to go 11spd if you don't want to.. But it's nice
Thanks, just checked on bike-discount and still cheaper than the discounted CRC even with postage.
I have 11spd XT on my Scout but want a bit more range and torn between the 46 and 50.
The 50 goes from 42-50 so would be like my current 10spd but with an extra bailout if my legs are knackered lol .
I've got the 11-46 on my fatbike, Sram X01 shifter and mech, KMC chain, On-One 30t chainring.
First ride on it over the weekend and despite the cassette being the only new part it shifted as well as anything I've used before.
11-46 on my plus bike. It's a little less smooth shifting than my Shimano one but perfectly acceptable. I'll buy another one when I need it
I think the cheapest one (ms8) is all steel, the mx8 has a alloy biggest ring and the mx80 two biggest are alloy.
I just fitted and have had one ride on a mx8 11-46. It replaced a 4 ride old 11-42 slx. Initial impression is that the shifting is better (new kmc 11.93 chain) and too my surprise I found that I can back pedal for ages on the 46 (neither the slx or xt 42 I've had did this on the same bike).
Merlin was the cheapest UK price I think. Though I've paid twice as I first ordered from athlete shop which has now gone bust.
Only downside so far is the red alloy carrier does not match my orange hubs (I'm going to be very sad and paint it black).
Pleased with mine. Backpedals in all gears, shifts smoothly.
Time will tell on durability but only the 46 is alloy do should be good there too!
Thanks all.
Sounds like the MX is the lighter option.
Just need to decide between 46t and 50t.
50t imo... Youll either want it slightly harder or slightly easier than 46..which it does 👍
The only negative i've found with a Sunrace cassette is the amount it bites into an alloy freehub body.
I have a Hope Pro2 Evo alloy freehub, Hope advise an XT / XTR cassette on these as the sprockets are mounted via a wide spider that spreads the load across the alloy freehub body. Not so with a Sunrace as most of the sprockets are individual. I've just had trouble removing my Sunrace cassette from the freehub, due to it having bitten into the alloy & had to file off the burrs. Never had this with years of using XT cassettes.
I’ve got the 11-46 on my fatbike, Sram X01 shifter and mech, KMC chain, On-One 30t chainring.
What length SRAM mech MrP?
Two of my bikes have 11-46t cassettes.
Like them.
On my 150/150 bike, going downhill over rough stuff: if the cassette is not really, really tightened the thing starts to rattle on the freehub. Not a big issue. Take the rear wheel out and put a bit more torque onto the locking nut...(never had that with 11-36t cassettes)
Others: have the impression that the forces acting onto the Shimano rear mech are much higher as well. Have some older XT rear mechs around which I used for years and years. They are still fine. But the half year old Shimano rear mech in combination with the 46 cassette developed already some play (twisting the mech around vertical axis). Performance is still fine - but suspect that I won't get a 3 years biking out of this piece of equipment...
Sounds a bit like we trade more fun with more wear...?

If we are being fair this applies to the SLX cassette as well. I had to use a rubber mallet to get the one off that had only been on a few rides! Going to put a steel freehub on when the bearings need changing.
@ oikeith
According to SRAM's website the 11 speed X01 only came in 1 size which is long.
I took the mech, shifter and chain off my other bike when I went GX 12 spd.
The fatbike has a shimano freehub and the Sunrace MX8 was the cheapest option for the cassette from bike-discount.de

I was a bit disappointed to be honest with my slightly increased range on a 27.5 wheel with a 32T on the front and 11-40 at the back going to 11-42.
Nothing bad but the 42T just seems less useful than the old 40T (10 speed expander) in the real world.
On the negatives it means a longer chain (OK only slightly) that needs more keeping on when I hit the rough stuff.
It also means more expensive chains and on the XT cassette a non replaceable 42T... whereas on my old 40T expander I could wear it out and just use the expander... good news though is as I'm not really using the 42 its like new...
I do miss a bail out at the end of a long day but not for most of the time... the 42T just doesn't seem to carry enough speed on technical climbs... though I'm sure in some its more useful than others but when you have rocks and roots I just seemed to get stuck in 1st then find it hard to find the right place to change down without shifting under tension... perhaps part of that though is the tooth spacing?
I don't hate it or anything... like I don't want to rip it off but TBH it just doesn't seem to provide the £££ value ???
My 11-46 seems to be creeking on Hope pro 4, but it has has a week in dusty Switzerland and two weeks on dusty local stuff. Going to prise it off the gouged freehub grease up and tighten it up more.
Cant comment on the wider ranges but I have a 11-42 Sunrace and it’s been faultless. Interesting about them gouging the free hub, I’ll have a nose and see if this is more evident than the XT it replaced..
...and tighten it up more.
O.k. - seems not only me running into this issue...!
Not checked the free hub with my 10-42t 10 speed - might whip it off and have a look.
Are people needing a spacer at the back of the 11spd cassette to give enough clearance to tighten the lockring ?
I’ve been running sunrace mx8 11-46t on two bikes it’s a great cassette
with either SRAM gx/x1 or shimano XT, backpedaling isn’t an issue
(runs on a regular free hub body and if far lighter than the SRAM cassette) my wheels aren’t an xd driver so the choice was easy
chainring wise im running a 32t on the heavier bulkier wheeler bike and a 34t on my lighter short travel full sus and it is rapid and will climb anything in Pennines and peaks..
on my lefty f29er I will be moving to the same cassette from the Xt 11-46 which to be honest has been fine , but won’t back peddle,
will eventually go XTR/ XT 10-51 with a 36t upfront . Now that should be great, a year or so off
@ scruff I’ve used a spacer on rf arc wheels ( not sure if hub brand) as the cassette seemed to untighten and rattle a little, far better since adding a mavic £1.50 spacer off crc
I've a spacer in my hope pro 4. It's needed for any non road 11 speed cassette in that hub.
