Thinking about all this 1x drivetrain stuff and as my cassette/chain/chainrings are all worn on my 3x9 set-up. was considering going 1x on the cheap, using existing 9speed mechs etc.

Does anyone have any experiences of the Sunrace cassettes?  How are the ratio gaps? What's the shifting like? Do Narrow/Wide rings work on 9 speed chains?  I'm assuming I'll need a hanger extender for my X0 long cage mech.

Cheers,

Keith

I'm very happy with the 10 speed version.

Shifting fine, gaps ok, works well with a 30t up front. Only using Shimano mechs on mine but they didn't need an extender. NW on 9spd all working fine for me.

Yes,done this on my winter bike ,including xo rear mech.Works well.Ratios are not as close, but soon got used to that.Shifting is fine once the b screw is set (screwed in all the way).N/W rings hold a 9 speed chain. It will sometimes jump off on very rattly trails as I am using an old type mech without the extra spring tension. However this is rare. Probably leaving the front mech on to act as a chain retention device would cure this, but I prefer the clean look without it.

have been using the 11-40 10 speed for a few months and it's good kit so I've ordered the 11 speed version as part of an upgrade plan. The ratio gaps are ok on the 10 but there's a bit of a jump around the first 3rd of the cassette where you're likely to be spinning along, not terrible though. 9 speed looks like it has a bigger jump up to the 2 largest sprockets but its less of an issue there

don't know if this will format but the spreads for the 11,10 & 9 speed look like this:

11 13 15 17 19 21 24 28 32 36 40
11 13 15 -- 18 21 24 28 32 36 40
11 13 15 -- 18 21 24 28 -- 34 40

I could get it working with a long cage mech and a lot of B-screw but it was better with a hanger extender since the chain wraps round more of the cassette

Used them both my boy's bikes they work well. Used those cheap roadkink copies to extend out the Mech and had to file a bit of it to get it flush on one of the bikes. They are only £1.50 on ebay so its no biggy.

Had one on the boys bike (my old Superlight) but it kept throwing the chain even with a NW chain ring. Used an old Acera mech and it shifted OK, but he started jumping stuff and running less pressure in the rear shock and it was all a bit unreliable. Switched out to a 10 speed clutch setup and its been fine so I assume the suspension compression was the issue - have other hardtails running 9 speed on 'normal' cassettes with single NW ring, no clutch mech with no problem.

I'm ab worried about that 15-18 jump from 6th to 7th, as that's right in the range I reckon I'll be using most.  Currently do s lot of my local riding in the 44t buffing, using gears 3/4/5 (24, 21, 16 I think).

I also remember when 9 speed came along and eliminated that gap on an 11-32 cassette.

I guess a simple answer would be to ride around in the middle ring and see if run out of gears or spending lots of shifts going up and down multiple gears...

Can't believe I've only just thought of that...  🙄

It's bearable but that's the compromise of a 1x drivetrain, especially squeezed into 9 sprockets
