Right guys, I need your help.

My group alpine holiday plans have fallen through and so it's going to just be me and the Mrs. She's a non cyclist and would like to go somewhere sunny, with a bit of culture and plenty to see and do. I want to sneak the bike along so I can hit the trails for a few hours whilst she sits by a pool/lake/the sea.

Under the circumstances, i'm looking for some suggestions where I can preferably ride from the front door of wherever we are staying so I can maximise the few hours I might be able to grab and SWMBO can grab a few hours in the sun.

Open to suggestions from the masses. Thanks in advance!

Basquemtb - Based in Honarribia which has nice beaches, bars, restaurants.

San Sebastian isnt far away for city type things, spas etc.

Other places worth a visit are Bilbao, Pamplona, Bayonne - all day-trippable. (and countless lovely coastal places like Getaria)

Edit - I now realise you probably not after a bike company (although you can rent Doug for a day).

Still, the basque country would be a good option, you just wont have someone showing you the best trails. Although If you ask, you'll get a few suggestions.

I'll take a look at Basque MTB. Anyone got any experience of taking along a non cyclist?

Lake Annecy is lovely - you're quite right. Any suggestions on somewhere in the area that would allow me to ride from the door? I'm wondering whether somewhere near Finale or Nice might be up to the job but am open to sensible suggestions.

My in-Laws live in San Pedro southern Spain, and when we drive over, I ALWAYS take my bike...

For some sedate / easy, simple stuff I head out to the "Grand Designs House" as there are loads of free local trails around there, great scenery for the Mrs & Kids on a day trip, and they can relax at the house, using the pools etc for a few Euros a day... whilst I ride around the lake. (and they wave / heckle as I ride past)

For a bit more of a Buzz, I head out to: ALICANTE BIKE PARK

Its AWSEOME, and a real Gem, check our some of the trials on you tube.

All Just a few miles drive from the sunny tourist trap that is the southern Spain !

Crete? The less touristy western end past Chania is great - lots of nice culturally stuff going on, great beaches, no crowds. The riding is great too - miles of trails and gravel roads. Take chunky tyres and mind the dogs. Rabid bloody things are everywhere and they all want a piece of your leg.

My first biking holiday was with Bikeverbier with MrsT tagging along. She was needing some R&R at the time and was happy to lounge around the chalet reading books and sleeping a lot. We have been to Spain and I have booked a couple of days riding/bike hire with Sierracycling. There was another year I did the same, staying on the Costas and getting the train up to Alora and hiring a bike and joining a group from ????? forget the companies name! I have also cycled 3 times in Slovenia by just hiring a bike and getting the best map of the area available 😆
We also had a trip to Chatel with http://summitdown.com/ in 2012 and stayed in an amazing old chalet just on the edge of the village. MrsT enjoyed the cafes and mountain views whilst I went off biking. Took a day off and we went up to the bike park and then took the lifts up to the cafes for a day out and she could get the feel of the mountain top atmosphere. Going up on the chairlift being something of a personal hate for her 😕

Its all just balancing what you both want/need from the holiday.

Hoping to get out to Doug@Basque sometime 💡
