Did Afan for the first time in donkeys years (been off the bike for a long time) and I found Penhydd damn tough.
I'm more an XC mincer and prefer climbs and swoopy stuff. I found the blue run fine, and most of Penhydd challenging but doable, but the last few bits of single track before it merged with blue scar were damn tough for me.
How do the other runs compare? Would blade be a good progression between blue scar and Penhydd, or should I keep at Penhydd until I man up or break my neck?
For someone who's been off the bike for a while Penhydd has a fairly big climb to kick off with. Well done!
If you found sections of Penhydd tough you'll find Blade tougher. You've got the whites level climb to warm you up then some of the sections are a bit more technical than what's on Penhydd. I always enjoy riding Blade though 🙂 I rode Penhydd and Blue Scar on Sat whilst riding W2 and had a great time. I rode Blade yesterday morning. With the weather like it is at the moment its a great time to be on your bike in Wales.
I'd say just load up on Haribo and bravery, exercise some caution and go give it a go!
I would do Whites Level. I would say that is a bit smoother than Penhydd. My 9 year old son did Penhydd last October and found it fairly hard, although rode all the tricky bits. We did Whites Level last week and he found it a lot more fun. The start of the climb is a bit tricky now, but once past that it is all fine. I haven't ridden Blade so not sure on that.
Thanks guys, I'll give Whites Level a go and also keep hitting Penhydd.
