I'd like to rebuils my old bike and would like to get V-brakes instead of cantis. I'm thinking about Avid Arch Rivals and Avid Single Digit SL... What else? Or just use mini-Vs, and keep the STI levers I have at the moment?

I used to have a set of XTR v's and they were excellent

You'll need levers as well. You can't use canti levers with v-brakes without some sort of adapter.

Agree with Kato that XTR v's are fantastic.

Yeah XTR or nothing IMO, anything else is just trying to be as good. With XTR levers and good blocks they will be ace in the dry...

Older parallel push shimano brakes are all good if you can get the 2nd generation version's which were less prone to squelling. If you can get a deal on the the avid ultimates they are also a great brake. Just reread your post get the brakes that suit your bar set up if you stay with sti's the avid shorty ultimates are a great bike if yiu set them up right from the begining.

Use KoolStop salmon or dual compound inserts in asymmetric cartridges.

Ninja edit on the STIs...

If you go for XTRs (or any v-brakes) you'll have to use a Travel Agent to get the right pull.

I'd look at Avid Shorty Ultimate cantis.

I could swap the levers, too. Maybe worth to change, if i get good V-brakes...

Think mine were m960. They had loads of feel with XTR levers too

I've been using xt v-brakes and a travel agent on my commuter and the brakes are good but they travel agent is a bit of a faff and gets serioulsy gunked up. I wouldn't use one again if I could help it.

Actually... are we talking drop bar STIs, or old school combined flat bar shifters and brake levers?

If the former I'd get Shorty Ultimates, if the latter I'd get XTR v's.

We are talkin' about the second, I mean I have older combined falt bar shifter/lever... So maybe should upgrade Sram Attack shifters and XTR or Avid V's, for example.
