You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Middle_oab wants a ride to finish his DofE skill - he had suggested the Etape, but I'm not paying £150, or for the pair of us to ride in a crowd on such small roads...
Ideally 50miles, non competitive, fun event in May, June or July, that's not silly money.
why does it have to be an event?
just plan a 50mile loop and ride it when you want. for free.
or do an Audax. they only cost a few quid. not sure how many you'll find as short as 50 miles though.
I agree - he seems keen on event, I think following brothers who have been doing some races...
Edit: some social bits to it would be good too...
Edited above while you were typing
Look at a 100km audax. Its not much further than 50 miles. There's usually a few at Forfar or Galashiels. And cheap anyway.
The Snow Roads 300km is a great ride...
Or the Bealach na Ba sportive is fun. 72km for the short option in May.
Skinny Tweed 9th June. 50ish miles?
Or Isle of Mull 4th June.
How old is he?
I organise www.ridetothesun.co.uk and three 12 year olds did it last year.
100.5 miles, overnight, Carlisle to Cramond beach (Edinburgh) on the weekend nearest the summer solstice. FREE to enter, chip shop stop in Moffat and cyclorave at the Crook Inn!
Check out the feedback
The cyclorave is a disco at a derelict pub in the middle of the night while folk stop for water and bananas

I think it makes sense to finish the skill with some sort of putting it into practice event. It would be nice if that was going to actually use the SKILLS he's learned not just be a physical activity. FWIW whilst I think the Etape is overpriced, I think it is much better than riding in a crowd on small roads. BUT the skill level is highly variable and he may not get to put in practice what he's learned.Middle_oab wants a ride to finish his DofE skill - he had suggested the Etape, but I'm not paying £150, or for the pair of us to ride in a crowd on such small roads...
Club run Matt? They are 'organised' and can be over that distance...
Fair point Dick, but my one road jaunt and one meeting of a peloton from SBC is not something I have any desire to expose my kids to, even at 15.... 🙁
Plenty of other Sportives around through the summer. Trossachs Ton is in June and would be very handy for you, with no accommodation costs.
There are 79 and 109 mile options.
That's 6 months of training.
The 6months training is rather convenient from DofE point of view....
Are there any 'off road sportive's"?
There is the Back of Skiddaw sportive, part of the Keswick Mountain festival 70km. Its not Scottish of course
Sure wiggle or evans or someone organises a series of gravel/cx type sportives through the year, I think Cycling Weekly or Road.cc has a list of them
Got a feeling there is one of them based around Galloway Forest?
Drumlanrig Challenge is in May. Really nice event with some cracking roads.
Mtb wise there is the Selkirk Marathon.
Pedal the park from lochwinnoch just outside Glasgow . Out to Largs and over fairlie moor , we did it last year and it was a good day out .
About 15 quid and a food stop thrown in , late April I think .
Drumlanrig Challenge is excellent - used to sell out pretty much on the day entries opened though - not sure if this is still the case.
Trossachs Ton was dire this year - signage issues, worst feed stations i've seen, and i'd have ridden my 29er if i'd known the state of the road surfaces.
My vote would be for the ochil hills sportive:

Drumlanrig challenge looks perfect - thanks folks 🙂
Etape Loch Ness. Incredible scenery and route!
Are there any 'off road sportive's"?
Yes. they call it Enduro. Disguise it as a DH stage race and make you carry your own food.
