You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Ok, so I just bought a 150mm full sus second hand (GT Force), but looks as if its gonna be a bit of a chonk. This will be fine for most of the mountain riding I've done before ( had a bit of a break, getting back into it cos I've had enough of road cycling).
Thing is, I dont mind a nice long XC bimble either ( loads of climbing, fire roads and roots but no big drops).
So my questions are , could I make the GT ( alu frame) into a decent enough part time XC'er, or do I get another cheapish second hand 26" XC bike to keep it company? I'd likely be doing 50/50 rough stuff and XC.
If I were to consider a second bike, what might the good people here suggest? Or am I just being a covetous greedy git?
Nothing really ‘cheapish‘ these days. As ever, depends on your definition!
Something appreciably different from yr susser?
I’d probably buy a retro 1990s MTB (cromo) and turn it into a 1x10 monster-cross? Even a single speed go even lighter. I love my single speed P7. Totally different experience. Great workout.
Keep the patina. Rustoleum then clearcoat any rust spots Keep it light, Deore vees, some Race King 2.2s or similar. 44cm drop bars (go a frame size down if fitting drops.
Rag it aboot
*Edit. Or try on one Mary bars? Have had a lot of fun on an old Cannondale 26er with those on it. Plus 2.35 Big Apples. Fast.

Now that is pretty much what I had in mind, an old steel Kona maybe ( I had one in '94, loved it) , or an old voodoo bizango steel, something like that.
Also had a hard on for the Volvo Cannondales from back in the day in blue and yellow.
Drop bars are a no-no though, which is why I'm giving up on the road biking. Big stiff neck makes it very difficult to see anything other than the front wheel , and I like to have a scan aboot when I'm ragging it aboot.
Vees would be ideal, I never had a complaint with them unless the wheel buckled out on a ride.
Any more ideas/ suggestions? All appreciated.
90s will have retro tax,it'll be cheaper to get something younger - have a look on eBay etc
Yeah retro tax seems to be a real thing from what I can see. Had a Ti hardtail for almost all of the 2000's and some of the 2010's, so never felt the urge to change bike. Hard times came, had to sell it, now find myself missing 12 years or so of bike models.
That thread is a goldmine, used to run my Ti with Kona P2 forks just fine when my SIDs packed up.
Anything stand out from about 2005 onwards? Like the idea of a Genesis ioid for the simplicity and clean lines, but never ridden one. My current road/gravel bike is a Genesis and have been impressed by it.
Anyone had one?
I have a Chumba HX1 on ebay at the moment - would that suit?
