is it me who is just a soft shyte, or anyone else suffer from the cold the older they get ?
been going out on a regular basis, but as the temps have dropped i find i can only stand a couple of hours. this morning i was wearing a long sleeve polo neck thermal base layer with a paramo winter coat. full trousers and knee length wool socks, winter buff and gloves. i was still bloody cold after 15 minutes. and when we got home after 2 hours i was proper chilled.
when i was a youngerman, i never felt the cold. base layer and a light jacket was enough in the winter with some ron hills.
is it a age thing ? or more. any tips ?
Yeah seems plausible to me... i don't weather as well as 20 years ago that's for sure.
just my right foot.
Don't lose weight. I lost about 20kgs in the last 2 years, and I properly feel the cold now.
I've lost about 10kg since 2019 and am now back down to 70kg and seem to now have chronic Reynaud's when it's cold. It really sucks. I'm considering putting ON some weight to see if it makes a difference.
Is it not a fact of life that the older we get, the more (most of us) feel the cold?
It gets my eyes - a tiny waft of cool air and they're spouting water, add that to a low sun with flickering shadows and I can't see a damn thing.
Tony, I'd imagine your AF will have a wee effect?.
I'm with Jim! Lost weight over the last few years and this winter I am definitely feeling the cold!
Less brown fat as you age.

You can boost it though.

Yeah, especially beta blockers or warfarin if you're on either of those. Plenty of other reasons, too, though.
I started to feel the cold more after I turned 40, before then I was never really bothered. I find down jackets really help, I even have a sleeveless one for cycling. If I'm not doing something particularly active I might wear two! Ski gloves, neoprene socks and a thick beanie hat come out below 5C. Mrsfoo also swears by fleecy lined trousers and jackets under other layers. Below 0C I'd also add a tight fitting base layer but these more wick away sweat so it doesn't chill you. Keeping your core warm is the key.
Yeah, I'm sitting here freezing, but damned if im putting on the heating just yet. Too bloody expensive these days and me on a low income.
Activity helps.
Another thing thats good is a pair of the hideous ex Warsaw pact military undertrousers ive a couple of pair of and the family all hate the look of, as i just wear them around the house. But the insulation is pretty darn good for keeping the legs a bit warmer.
I've pretty much worn out both pairs i have, ripped, insulation flattened etc so was looking to get some more and thought these might be an option.
This seller is out of stock, but plenty of others and just to give you the idea.
Yeah, especially beta blockers or warfarin if you’re on either of those
yeah, on both again now. but it cant be just that. old age i reckon........ 'o)
I'm mid 40's and wore my Buffalo shirt for the first time on bike rides last winter, always thought I'd be too warm in it. Also wear full tights much more than ¾ length these days.
Yeah seems plausible to me… i don’t weather as well as 20 years ago that’s for sure.
I'm sure it's the case. If you are skinny like me then especially so. I'm probably warmest when out fell walking, extremities coldest when cycling (wind chill?) and coldest sitting around not using much energy (HH, T-shirt and fleece in the house right now).
Definitely, and that goes for both of us here
I work outside a lot, wear a few layers, and woolly hat pulled down over ears, fingerless mitts with disposable gloves on under them thin so you can feel things like screws, and when you cut your hand and dont notice because you have little feeling in your hand when cold you see the glove turning red inside.
Also hot soup keeps you warmer than tea or coffee.
just my right foot.
It’s my left foot. Nowt to do with cold, it just aches when biking.
I don’t ‘suffer’ from the cold as much as I can’t be arsed biking in it. 35 years ago I hated being too warm, now, at 65, I hate being cold. I reckon I’ve got enough tee shirts for riding in absolute crap weather & (as Ton knows) I’m pretty much a fair weather rider. Done it all, can’t be arsed anymore.
Sure sign of getting old - wearing coats in the summer.
And seeing skimpily clothed girls on a night out and your first thought is “they’ll catch their death of cold without a coat “.
Mid fifties, feet and hands feel it more. Bought a set of Mountain Equipment Guide gloves for this winter, not used in anger yet, and experimented with heated insoles and pogies last year. Thing is, cold sunny weather is my favourite riding.

It's just a case of managing it. Walking/mountaineering gear works much better than cycling kit.
Loss of muscle bulk innit. Less heat generated in the first instance.
Any tips..
Heated vest off amazon, doesn't need to be on all the time, or even it highest setting, bloody great!
Late 40's here and suddenly this year my hands and feet get cold, and then don't warm up as quickly as they used to.
I am definitely wearing more layers when out in proper cold.
At 50 once im up and running im ok, but getting going is a lot harder. I end up doing static jumps in the car park waiting for others to get ready.
Thermal base layer and madison thermal lined softshell.
And a buff over nose and mouth always - once i gulp down ice cold air my lungs just lock up.
i think i posted on another thread, but this is the first year im thinking of long trousers for cycling on and off road. always been a 3/4 shorts wearer in the winter but i've been feeling the cold a lot this autumn for some reason.
Only just ticked over 41, but definitely noticed a change. Also really feel the cold if i'm tired these days, early mornings i'm wrapped up like a baby!
Yes I do but with that also I am a 'soft southerner' 🙄😂
I noticed that I was feeling the cold more during lockdown when the gym was closed so I wasn’t lifting weights or eating as much. Now I’m back to it I’m pretty cold-proof again!
I thought it was because of having a higher resting metabolism (and I’m sure that’s part of it) but I recently read that a diet that’s higher in protein or fat and lower in carbs keeps you warmer because your body works harder trying to digest it.
My father-in-law is always cold but he never does any exercise and is in his early 70s rather than early 40s. I don’t want to be like that!
I hate being properly cold, I think I’m traumatised from years of standing on the playing fields at school but almost never kicking a ball. But I like being out in the cold and it has to be pretty cold vs my clothing before it bothers me now. Shorts all year round for work, commuting and MTBing (knee pads for proper riding or colder commutes, long socks if it’s snowy or below freezing).
My hour and a half ride on Saturday (1*c, ice everywhere, raining hard) I popped a foot heating pack under my overshoes. Oh. My. Word. that was lush warmth. I am doing that again and need to investigate more sustainable ways of warming feet.

i'm seriously considering some heated socks but trying to find a decent set that won't set fire to my feet.
I've been suffering from chilblains type symptoms in my toes this last couple of years. 99% sure it's not 'covid toes' but genuine chilblains. Cold biking probably the culprit kicking them off but the house and work are cold too.
I read the NHS website and it mentioned cutting out caffeine as it reduces blood flow. Stopped drinking caffeine and 48hrs later symptoms had gone completely.
Gutted. Whilst it's great to have shifted the issue to discover dropping my beloved coffee was the solution is rubbish. I've been drinking decaff - it's not the same, even the good stuff.
Used to be a human furnace, people couldn't understand the permaheat that emanated from me.
Delivering pizzas on a scooter as a 16yo in December with a t-shirt and no gloves.
Now 43 and over the last couple of years if the wind changes direction I go hypothermic.
But in all seriousness, I now find it difficult to get comfortably warm in cold temps. Pretty sure I did go hypo after one training session in late summer. The cold gets into the bones and stings like never before. I absolutely hate ageing.
Edit* am also wondering if being post Covid status has made things worse. Would be interested to hear from others who've tested positive and are now struggling with temp regulation like never before
Walking/mountaineering gear works much better than cycling kit.
When it's really cold I wear ski gloves. Cycling gloves, even winter ones, just don't seem that well designed or warm.
Of course you are a soft shyte Ton! Should have played a mans game 🙂
I certainly feel colder now I am older and I do not buy the lack of muscle bulk or fat layer as I have more of both now than 20 years ago. funny thing is even tho I am cold sitting here I am still peripherally dilated so losing heat thru my hands and feet. I used to be able to go out in the snow barefoot quite comfortably
In your case ton the cardiac drugs do not help I think
I'm 64 and have always been pretty resistant to cold . Haven't really noticed it getting any worse as I've got older . Still ride in short finger gloves all year round , usually don't ever need anything more than 3/4 leggings , don't wear overshoes . I have never drunk coffee ,so there may be some truth in what was said about it reducing blood flow .
This thread has made me feeL slightly better! I never used to feel the cold. But since turning 40 it’s been horrific! I really struggle even in the bloody house! My wife thinks I have gone mad. Funnily enough I don’t struggle with my hands or feet, just my core. I seem to be OK when out on the bike and up to temperature. I just put it down to age.
