$25!

To be fair, Putoline adds drag especially when fresh. I wouldn't put it on a TT bike. The good thing about it is that it doesn't wash off. So if this doesn't wash off either, I'm all in favour.

$25 for 100 mls of wax / solvent mix. Or £30 ish for a kilo of wax! I have around 8 yrs worth left in my tin

Could be an ideal top-up though

I know bonkers isn't it? I do like Silca's approach to stuff. How long before they refer to this as "Legacy Lube"?

Somewhere between TJ and Northwind on this one.

Although what makes this silca stuff different from any other drip on solvent based wax lube? Putoline's advantage is the shear volume of wax that's inside the chain, not just a microscopic coating that lets water in to wash it off.

Molgrips,
Variations on putoline generally come out with the lowest drag figures in tests. It does feel stiff initially but I think that's just the solid wax on the outside of the links, once that breaks down in the first few pedal revolutions it loosens up.

This seems to be the same as Squirt, or Smoove, or Boeshield T-9, etc

...apart form the

world's fastest, most lubricious additive, nano-scale Tungsten Di-Sulfide

whatever all that means (usually it means nothing if the language is deliberately obscure and pseudo-scientific).

I'm sure it works well, but probably not quite as well as Putoline (though a lot easier to apply), and no better than the other wax based lubes mentioned above.

WS2 is like MoS2 but better, that's not really an argument.

Not sure what additives putoline uses, jugging by the smell it's a high sulphur wax/oil and the color suggests there's graphite in there, whether there's anything more complicated I've no idea.

You can buy things like WS2 powder, I was tempted to try making my own wax with some as I reckon you could get away with selling 200g tins of wax to cyclists as I doubt any of us will ever actually finish a tin of putoline!

That's my plan anyway if I'm jobless in the summer, that and a GXP BB that actually works.

I dread to think what lurks beneath the metal gauze in my 180'C molten Putoline and I don't intend to find out.

I like the smell and find the whole deep fat fryer, bake, shake, wipe and leave to cool on an old towel quite therapeutic. 4 years and counting. How many is many TJ?

I tried the kitchen stove once, just once, at 6.30am Saturday and the family awoke to the fumes asking if I was trying to kill them all.

You are not turning me Eddie!

Problem is you need a certain amount to fill the fryer enough.

Possibly if you ran past fast enough you could turn someone eddy? Would that do you?

I was thinking you could package it with a little meths burner 🤣

Putoline needs a massive tin because it's designed to hold a MX bikes chain, designing a product from scratch for mountain bikes I reckon a 200g tin sold for half the price would be quite popular.

I did finish my first tin. Took years

I actually scraped out about half my first tin, I was convinced there was a layer of oil settling on top so I tried to skim it off by binning the top layer.

Made no difference so now I have at least the next 10 years of top up in a tin under the workbench!

We could test the watts saving by having @yohandsome test them back to back up a 500m climb

If it's saving 5W on a TT bike you should hang your head in shame at the state of your bike.

Quite easy to use small quantity... use metal fast food tray and a heat gun. I used this with some candle wax experiments.

I'm sure I saw a chain for £125 saving 5W, the lube would last 600km.

I saw that same chain. One of those ceramic speed rip-offs. Can’t get it wet for first 600km, otherwise it washes off.

Ah, Northy, so close. You posted too quickly, a few more minutes and we'd have had the 3 wise putoline monkeys, HOUSE! 😊

Has anyone compared these hard/solid waxes against putoline? Wonder whether the slight softness of putoline is and advantage or disadvantage in terms of longevity.

Just reading some geeky articles on cycling tips about chains and lubes - seems it depends on the production processes and coatings as to whether a particular lube regimen works. https://cyclingtips.com/2018/03/fast-chain-lube-that-saves-you-money/
