Hello, hope your all well. Set off this morning in -4°c only to have all manner of mechanical issues. Some to be expected some not. Dropper and derailer not functioning as per, bit Russian roulette on the shifting. Headset frozen (my fault needs replacing) but the most drastic, complete loss of engagement with the cassette on rear wheel which i thought was terminal but after a defrost appears to be working. Do I bin off extremely cold conditions or does the hive mind of the singletrack forum have work arounds. Thanks in advance. Stay safe
Sounds like you need to do a bit of tlc and get the water out of cable housings and the freehub.
But a temporary trailside fix is to pee on your freehub. Shimano one by any chance?
My top tip is go for a run, or do a Zwift 😃
Altho I have ridden in subzero conditions before and not had those problems, so maybe lack of maintenance as above!
Headset frozen - why is there even water in it to freeze? Strip, grease, tighten properly.
Dropper - possibly water in cable.
Derailleur - could be cable or frozen pivots. Replace cable, use WD40 or similar on pivots to help prevent from icing up. Piss on it for a temporary fix. Adopt Singlespeed. Fit 2x so you at least have two speeds.
Freehub - again, could just be water penetration. Strip/re-grease likely to fix it.
When it's very cold the mechanicals tend to work well. It's those intermediate temperatures when things get wet and then freeze that cause problems.
Don’t put off replacing the battery in your car for 6 months when you know it needs doing.
-4 and not going anywhere this morning...
To be honest TLC is a bit lacking bike went back in the shed wet after last ride. The wheels a Marin own brand. Never experienced freehub issues before so probably wet then frozen. (Headset defence, it’s a FSA which has issues, ordered a new frame with headset, fitted so holding out for the arrival of that. Extreme fix I know)
