I'm looking to build a lightweight 29er hard tail and am looking to spend no more than 1k but want it to be as light as possible. Can it be done? Don't mind buying used, size small.
Cheers folks
On-one scandal frames are lightish - they were £150, I think £200 now. If you hunt you will be able to get a 2nd hand one.
Chinese carbon 29er from eBay.
Scandal is not sub 1 kilo, nor are the Chinese carbon frames, 1150 is the lowest Chinese one I've seen.
Very few frames will be sub 1kg and nothing for less than £1000.
Sub 1200g is a good weight for a 29er frame, 1400-1500g normally, even in carbon.
Second hand Scott Scale carbon if you can find one I guess. I'd probably go for a slightly heavier frame and tricker drivetrain, wheels and finishing kit.
Dirty Harry is good for the money...my medium weighed in at 1193g, only slightly more than the quoted weight (FWIW my Scandal 29er 16" weighed 1716g). Dirty Harry gives you lots of change from £1000 to find a 193g saving 😀
Sorry - mis-read the question! 😳
It'd have to be carbon - previously I had a large 26er carbon XTC, that weighed 1308g.
Sh Niner Air Nine Carbon....small 29ers just look wrong IMO.
I'm not fussed about the look* I just want it to fit and be light/fast.
2nd hand Scott Scale tickles my fancy.
The project will be a weenie Ultegra Di2 race bike, possibly lefty.
*I am really
As others have said I think you'll really struggle to get sub 1kg for under £1k
Just bought a Felt Nine FRD frame, super high tech TeXtreme carbon and that is bang on 1kg but it was £1869!
I'm selling my other Nine Carbon frame if you are interested

Derrrr just spotted you need a small
It's a lot of money to spend to save a few grams on a frame! I would buy lighter wheels, carbon bits hear and there and like I do run a carbon rigid fork instead. My Scandal is a flying machine and the whole bike only weighs in under 20 lbs. As Clink said higher up, my original 16" Scandium Scandal frame weighs 3.1lbs or 1.40 grams and cost nothing like a grand.
Just my humble opinion!
Funworks 29er they are around 1000g and £600ish from actionsports.
Good shout Milky, thats the best I've seen so far.
Medium sized Whyte 29C frame was 1100g with a seat collar when I weighed it in our workshop on the digital scales. Reckon a small is going to come in around 1050g or so.
The benefit is that unlike a lot of cheap/light carbon frames, the Whyte is an exceptionally good ride!
Being a small company, got to be worth asking your local Whyte Dealer if they can get hold of a frame only... Full bikes start at £2250 RRP.
