Modding my bike for Dirty Reiver... Intending to go sub-compact 30-44 or 32-46 at front.
Has anyone done this using a Hollowtech (or similar 2-piece crank) road triple, using the inner and middle rings?
- Will a 46 clear the chainstays in the middle position?
- What will chainline be like? Will the 'outer' ring in the middle position be at a bad angle in the smallest rear cog?
Bike is Charge Plug, steel with 135mm back end, 68mm BB shell. Chainstays aren't particularly shaped in any direction.
It seems I should be able to get it to work, possibly by using a 2.5mm spacer between frame and BB cup, though this would reduce spline engagement on the ND side...
Anyone tried it?
If it's problematic I will just go down the route of a cheap Spa/Stronglight sq. taper triple...
Cheers!
This is the ideal... but £££

This is more realistic:
I’ve got one of those praxis works sub compact 48/32 chain sets in my diverge - picked up cheap on eBay.
Shifting has been fine - paired with a medium 105 mech and 11/32 cassette.
Might be worth looking for one of those?
Thanks,
A
Assuming it’s 10 speed, you can also use a 9 speed MTB rear mech which’ll let you use a 36 cassette

I will be using a 9 speed MTB mech with 10 speed road shifters (probably an XTR m952) but don't want to go over my existing 12-30 cassette - otherwise would have just gone with a normal road compact double, with 34 or 36 cassette but not a fan of big cassettes and dangly mechs on road-ish bikes.
Having said that... it's starting to look like the cheaper/easier option to get a modern crank with a near 1:1 ratio... ugh.
Just doing the same on one bike for Torino-Nice bike packing trip later in year. Going to try a Tiagra triple (£45 from Merlin) and swap the middle to a 44 and possibly the inner to a 28 if needed. Oh and using 10 speed 105 shifters, 11-32 cassette and M970 9 speed rear mech. I am weak so need all the gears I can get!
Interested in experiences of sub compact - I never use the smallest 2-3 cogs on the rear cassette on my road bike as I'm more of a tourer than a sprinter. Thinking a sub compact would let me get away with a smaller rear cassette with smaller jumps between gears.
Andy - I was looking at some cheap Tiagra chainsets too but 92mm bcd inner rings not widely available outside of 30 teeth - I'd probably want a 32t inner ring.
I know the Stronglight option is probs the most versatile, if not very sexy...
One option is a 33t inner ring on a compact double with maybe a 32t on back: 33t 110mm bcd rings more widely available than they were...
I don't blame you for looking at a 28 though - if I was riding loaded up I'd consider the same
Is the 4603 92mm bcd 🙁 Thought they were 110/74!!
Edit: research says middle/outer are 130bcd Inner 92bcd
Thought they were 110/74!!
Nope. 130/92
Yes, well I have already answered that!
I looked at the Praxis compact+ chainset but it has a manufacturer specific bolt set up so I got the Sugino 44/30 which uses standard BCD chainrings so it gives the option in the future of using TA rings. With 38mm 650b tyres it's a little bit under geared with 12/28 but now I've got 48mm Compass tyres it's about right for me now.
Have just taken out a club run this morning and I wasn't disadvantaged against those riding normal compact gearing.
Not cheap mind, but it seems reliable and gives a decent spread of realistic gears for both road, gravel and off-road riding. If I was going to do any serious off-road again like Tuscany Trail then I'd probably drop to a 28 inner and go to a 32 block at the back.
Yes aP mindful of your previous recommendation. Looking for a cheaper option than the Sugino
Herself has ordered the 901D from HubJub for a much better price than I got mine for. It may be the same advantage for the 601D?
If my memory serves, the Sugino only goes down to a 30t inner ring, which to me seems not worth the price of the chainset, given that the OP can fit a 33t inner if he already has a 110 BCD chainset.
It may not be as pretty or as nice as something like the Middleburn Incy chainset, but I would get the Spa square taper chainset here, possibly with one of the Stronglight steel inner rings which Spa also sell and which are available with as few as 24t.
it’s a little bit under geared with 12/28
Interesting to note - Yeah I looked at the Praxis but was put off by the proprietary chainrings and lack of a separate inner BCD - 32t the smallest possible.
Really, the Stronglight/Spa is the better option for now as it allows funds for nicer rings and can try out a few ring sizes from existing stock.
Plus, there are a few nice light square taper BBs still available - there's a Tange hollow axle one at 221grams for £25 - only 1 gram more than a £115 TA one!!!
If my memory serves, the Sugino only goes down to a 30t inner ring, which to me seems not worth the price of the chainset, given that the OP can fit a 33t inner if he already has a 110 BCD chainset.
I haven't already got a spare 110 compact - hence the purchasing dilemma! My climbing of late has been all over the place - was fine on a hilly Peaks ride yesterday in 39 - 28 on (old steel) road bike. Well it was hard, but in a good way. Yet found 36 - 30 hard on some gravellier climbs on CX bike last weekend, so am erring towards a 1:1 for looser surfaces, especially given the Reiver is 200k of loose surfaces and I'm in unknown territory over 150k
If it's 74bcd inner the Sugino should take aftermarket inner rings, such as Spa/Stronglight, at extra cost of course.
