Hello,
I've decided to turn my 26" mtb into a 29" hybrid for my 7 mile commute into central (don't want to leave my road bike outside work), and so I'm selling off my old 26er stuff and brakes as they're ott for what I need.
I've sourced some Mt15 29er wheels, got some 32mm zaffiro pros and tubes ready and a carbon fork..
Now I'm looking to replace said brake set with something cheaper circa £45 all in for the set and rotors..
I've narrowed it down to these sets:
- Shimano M355 £32 + £10 for rotors
- Shimano M396 £40 + £10 for rotors
- Clarks M2 £35 inc rotors
- Tektro Draco 2 £40 inc rotors
- Avid Db1 £39 inc rotors (from HK)
Am I missing any? Which would you go for?
Many thanks in advance!
One of the Shimano's - I have them on one of my bikes (M355) and they're fine after much jetwashing, ignoring & abuse
Shimano M396 - have these on the kids bikes they are plenty good enough for what you require and have required no maintenance so far.
I would be happy using them for XC riding tbh.
I like the idea of fitting and ignoring 😈
The most off roading I can do around here is Richmond Park or the Thames Path so these probably won't be tested at all.
Cheers for the responses!
What're your current brakes? Why can't you just use them?
Hope C2's. I'd prefer to just have cheaper stuff on the bike to be honest.
Plus they need bleeding, the last ones I tried to bleed (M4's) were a nightmare and so I'd rather just sell them on to someone who know's what they're doing.
Fair enough. I've often considered "down grading" to cheaper stuff in the past; but it's rarely ever worth it since second hand prices for parts are usually very poor, especially since you can get a very good pair of Shimano brakes for less than £100 brand new
Yeah, I'm hoping the sale price of the C2's plus all the spares I have for it will allow me to buy some brakes ^^ some R540 pedals and a rear light.
Trying to stay cash neutral on this bike plus justify to the missus as to why I need two bikes haha.
I've also found these cable hyrdraulic (TRP HYRD copies):

Almost worth a punt to stick some road STI's and drop bars on the bike lol
yeh, Hopes usually bring a decent price second hand.
Deffo go with the Shimanos in your first post though!
Cheers!
The next decider after that is black or white brakes/pedals:
Hmm 😆 😆 😆
(it's not a hugely expensive bike but I like it 8))
black. And some black grips!
Pretty sure I've got an unused still in the pack set of Shimano 486 brakes which you could have for £50 posted including new olives & barbs if you need to shorten the hoses.
If you're interested email me.
Some perfectly good Magura Loiuses BATs in the garage, been faultless. Yours for £30
@ davidtayforth - yeah white grips really didn't work, they're more cream now, plus those particular ones tore my hands to shreds last time. Black, Black and Black it is. 😆
@granny_ring & coolhandluke - Cheers for the offers guys, but not looking to purchase until my C2's are sold (which could be tomorrow or next month).
I'm running the cheap clarkes skeletals on two bikes and they have performed absolutely faultlessly and no pad rubbing annoying noise you can get with some other brands .....picked one set of mine up for £19 including rotor, fitting bolts/caliper mount bracket with a set of sintered pads in!
No rush to sell, drop me an email when you've sold yours if you're interested.
crc have got formula rx's for £38
@Snuggsey - Yeah I saw them, they looked good but the Clarks M2's seem to be getting ever so slightly better reviews.
@granny_ring - Cheers!
@Rorschach - Cheers but that's per wheel.
