I've had my eye on buying an entry level hardtail and have spotted the three below. I'm 6ft5 and looking to get a 29er in XL. I don't know if a 27.5" would be too small so any advice on this aspect would be much appreciated. I don't know much more than Shimano mech hierarchy so anyone who knows anything more than a wannabe bike enthusiast would probably be able to give a better opinion than myself about the best of these three.
Onza PAYOFF 29" - £699
Grand Canyon AL 4.0 - £749
Vitus Nucleus 29 VRS Bike - £649.99
I feel that the Onza has some good components for the price but unsure how the Cro-Mo 4130 frame compares to the Aluminium 6061 of the other two. What do you think is the best or do you have any others to add to the mix?
See if Voodoo Bizango is avaialble in your nearby stores https://www.halfords.com/bikes/mountain-bikes/voodoo-bizango-29er-mens-mountain-bike---16in-18in-20in-22in-frames-448053.html
New Rockhopper might be worth a look.
Forget the voodoo you won't be able to buy new forks for it as it has a straight steered.
I've just bout the Rockrider AM HT 100 from Decathlon for £749
It's got a great spec: 130mm Sektor forks with Debonair shaft
NX 11 speed
Sun Ringle 40 wheels with 2.6 tyres (tubeless compatible)
Well put together
The Onza is a great spec and value, but will be too small for you. Wheel size isn't so much to do with height and I definitely wouldn't discount 27.5". My money would go on this.
Should be a much more capable bike than the others and a dropper at this money is a big bonus
Edit: Just beaten to it!
That Voodoo has a 1 1/8 fork which if the steerer isn't tapered either doesn't sound ideal?
Just to add, I can confirm that the dropper post on the Rockrider is a cable operated Tranz X model 120mm & works well
or for a more xc slant...

out of stock though, next model up is £850
I would get a marin san Quentin. I think they are 700 for the base model.not as good value as the rock rider but great geometry for downhill as well as climbing.gets good reviews. Has a super strong decent frame.
Voodoo Bizango at that price point - I thought the fork was tapered but even if it isn't - it has a 44mm head tube so takes a tapered steerer if upgrading.
Lots of info to take in, thanks.
The Voodoo looks good but I honestly can't find anywhere that has it in stock...
That Rockrider looks like a great spec. Only negative points in this review are the brakes. https://www.mbr.co.uk/reviews/hardtail/decathlon-rockrider-am-100-ht-review
I've got a Voodoo Bokor, basically a Bizango with a tapered heat tube and bolt through rear. Fits me fine at 6ft5.
The only thing you may struggle with is availability as everyone and their mum's are buying bikes.
Why wouldn't you buy the voodoo? Bar brand snobbery. It wins all the awards and is an excellent bike and is often written as punching above its weight. Stick a dropper on it and you are sorted.
Mine has a tapered fork on it (a Reba). So that advice is not true. Granted, did have to have the bottom headset cup changed but it will take a tapered or non tapered fork just fine.
My post wasn't meant as advice, I just clicked the link that had been posted and noticed the spec said 1 1/8th - As has been said if it has a 44mm head tube then no worries as a change in bottom headset cup and bearing will allow the upgrade.
Yeah in that case the voodoo looks great.theonly reason I'd go for the marin as its burley so it might not suit the o p.
Halfords are likely to get stock in late next week and also late May/June so will just have to keep checking to see the stock levels. Hopefully will get lucky.
