Just bought a sub 5 and its already got a hope headset in, I need to remove to replace and also 2 powder coat the frame. Just wanted to know will it be tapered or will it just bang out? Don't want to damage frame thts all. And also what will the size be so I can buy a new one.
Whilst I'm on the subject, I'm trying to remove the bb and can not shift for toffee, the bb looks quite and old style as I'm not sure if you can do it with a conventional bb wrench. I'll try and post a picture if that will help
Sub 5 is straight 1 1/8th the clue should be the straight outside, the BB will either be ISIS or Shimano (octalink/Sq Taper) by the souns of it so a new tool or trip to the LBS required, it's easy to chew the retaining part of the older bb's if you don't get the technique right/they are siezed.
Hard to tell whats in Focus but Octalink or ISIS (not had either for many years)
The BB is held in by a retaining cup, you need a tool like a cassette tool to remove it, it can slip so using something like an old QR or long bolt to hold it in place is advisable. Lots of lube and wear gloves.
Ok, I'll give it a go. Thanks very much. As for the headset I'm a bit unsure what u mean as I'm quite new to this and I'm just used to older bikes where the bb just hammered straight in.
Sorry headset hammered straight in.
The Sub 5 is a fairly old bike - last one in 04/05??
Tapered head tubes are as the say tapered. Standard ones are the same width top and bottom.
In all honesty if you are not sure pop along to a bike shop and ask, they will have all of the tools and probably be able to do it for you there and then and give you some advice about replacing the parts if needed. Easier then buying tools you may only use once and making a hash of it.
Yeh very true, thinking might actually do that as like u say I don't wana Bugger it up. Many thanks for your help mate, much appreciated.
I think those we're the last hope headsets where you have to replace the whole bottom half of the headset rather than just the bearings. I share your pain.
