Never a good idea to go into a race cold! Made it into the pen with 3 mins to warm up after a hectic day. Tried to weather the damage from the initial start, had it prolonged I would have dropped right out of it at 2km! Legs eventually appeared after hiding for 15km so thought I’d give it a go before the aqueduct and the sprint to try and get some splits going hoping the sprinters would save some gas, @phil56 seemed on it but didn’t come to much with the bunch being hauled back in. Last 3km was mental as @savoyad describes, chasing those two left me zero in the tank for the final sprint, which I fully mistimed anyway! Pleased with 3rd from that lead group, much better than I had anticipated. Thanks again Robbo!
Well that didnt really go to plan. I was in the front group until the attack that Paino describes above and I stupidly tried to go with Phil and Paino. I didnt quite bridge the gap and decided to drop back to the group behind...except I went flying out of the back and was a few seconds behind before I knew it and couldnt catch! I then dropped into the next group on the road.
Tried a few longer range attacks attacks to try and break that group but it didnt work out so I settled in until the last km when I went long again. Failed miserably and I think everyone came past me in the sprint! I need to try and actually compete in a sprint rather than going from 1 km out. That tactic isnt working!
Bit disappointed after picking up some decent points last week. Anyway onwards and upwards to chain chomper next week! Should be a tough course as we go up the climb twice so the group will spread out I think.
In other news I have got the course chosen and they are on their way over to Zwift for the next series of the league starting after half term (2nd November). I checked the course choices with a couple of people and it is believed to be the hardest parcours of a STW race series yet. Should be good to get you fit just in time for some mince pies!
A few big hitters returned last night so I think 9th was probably as good as I could have hoped for. As predicated, the fast lads disappeared over the viaduct (it's one thing predicting it and quite another doing something about it). I managed to form a gang of four with @yanboss, @tomnavman and @karnali and we rode in together, maintaining a minute gap to the larger group behind - which was tough going. 3 of us had ridden together in the Thursday WTRL TTT and I think that definitely helped. Those rollers really beat you up in the last 3km. I'm feeling it this morning :/
I’ve had a couple of weeks of any type of bike due to lingering cold and starting new shifts. The last few days I’d worked until midnight which is a shock to the system after years of working 9 to 5 and then a year and half of WFH.
Any really wasn’t feeling it and this time I was glad to sit in the group and not waste energy attempting the usual bursts to test or split the group. I was coasting near the back of the large group as we approached the slight incline before the pave sprint village and noticed 4 or 5 riders got away from the group. Had to decide if to just let it go and sit in for a nice steady plod in what would have become group 2 or give chase and likely burn some matches. I decided on the latter and put a big sprint in to pass the group and eventually catch up to the mini break away.
I was on and off 400/550 watts and using up an aero too just about manage to catch, dragging a few others from the group along with me. We caught the breakaway just in time for the Pave sprint so glad to hang on through that and try to recover for the viaduct where I expected a big push for a break would likely happen.
Noticed Savoyad smashing it up the aquaduct and tried to stay close to him but with a slight gap behind me I decided to ease slightly rather than kill myself so I could catch on to a few others and catch savo coming back down the hill. I think at the point he also eased up a bit. We stuck together until the esses and I totally mis timed an effort trying to pull away on the last climby section with the aid of a feather however it was far too early and not the last incline at all so buggered myself up for the remainder. Four of us pulled away other the last rise and was happy to be caught by Oblongbob and Mathowlett and draft down the hill behind them and muster my last few watts to just about pass them before the line.
I’m normally spent at the end of a race but last night I felt really ill, sickly and like I was going into arrest. Brutal, and my numbers with were way down on peak, other than my heart rate which was very high.
Thanks again Robbo, I’m touch and go for the next two.
Any plans for Sunday hills again soon?
Brian is trying to organise one for this Sunday.

Also dont forget the TTT everyone?

...and decided to drop back to the group behind…except I went flying out of the back and was a few seconds behind before I knew it and couldnt catch!
Do you switch camera views for this, Robbo?
The few times I have had to do this, a quick change to the rear facing view means you can gauge the approach speed a bit easier & ramp up your effort so they don't scream straight past.
It's a shame there's no 'rear view mirror' option 🙂
Oh it wasnt to do with not knowing where they were! It was a case of trying to hard and then not being able to accelerate to keep up and by the time I recovered (maybe 20-30 seconds later) a 7 second gap had opened up. I need to race smarter.
To get in the points I need to finish close to the front group and stay with them. I think I am about 5-10w or losing 5kg from doing this consistently. I have got stronger but that means I try to hard and then do myself in!
great race last night. enjoyed the tussle in the second group on the road
i was feeling under the weather last night, so didnt kill myself at the start, but settled into a decent group (possibly third on the road once the front split, by the sounds of it). Was with Copping, P.aul, D.Fee, mitchell zilog, bailey and mitchell (sorry if i missed anyone) and we seemed to have a solid pace.
The final twisty climb was a test of grit. Trying hard to hold on to each others wheels.
An enjoyable race overall.
I’m out for the TT this week, got a 10pm finish, will try to join again in the future though. Enjoyed my first attempt.
v7fmp
Yep that was me (nmorrish) with you - those twisties were killer
Ha I love reading people's reports. It was just so hard for anyone to get away off the front - @paino and @phil56 very nearly managed it in the run up to the aqueduct (I was initially caught out that time, tried to bridge, but I think that just brought it back together) and @phil56 and @scaled managed to escape for a while on the run in to the finish. But the front of the race was mainly about whittling the group down rather than successful attacks. Half of these posts are people describing being spat out the back or not getting on again when a gap opened.
It was such a hard course to establish a gap on, and the front group was always big and fast enough to close things down even if there were sometimes victims as it did so. It looks like the finishing groups (or solo riders) were really only established at the aqueduct. (And @straightliner I knew you'd be tempted by the KOM there after the way you rode the hills in Richmond last week).
Races in this series always have a different dynamic to standard zwift races on the same courses. It's partly the way @robbo1234biking crafts the stakes so we all have stuff to ride for in different ways. It's partly the riders.
Those starts are fierce. In theory this course should suit me, being of the chunky boy mould, but I could not hold on to the front two groups and ended up in the magnificent 7.
There was a 3 / 4 break at the viaduct, but I had a aero power up and figured I was better pulling us back together than saving it for the end. Thank me later.
I was late on my sprint finish, and got 7th of the group, that's the Eli Wallach position and I wanted the Yul Brynner one.
Still suffering from man-flu symptoms, so happy to finish. Hoping to start on Thurs.
@savoyad - ah, you saw through my cunning plan which wasn't really that cunning! In fairness, the Viaduct KoM is more of a sloping sprint than a real hill so mentally I thought I'd chance it. Legs decided otherwise.
(And as for the KoM title - I'm too big and heavy to be any good on the longer hills, but will often try on the shorter ones.)
Missed last night, hopefully its the only round I'll sit out. Well done all, it sounds like a tough one!
Last night was the first time back zwift racing, I've not been on the bike much this summer, and only just got over Covid, so was unsure how it would go. a test ride on Monday proved I was ok to go for it 🙂 I managed to keep with the front group for about 6 mins riding at my previous ftp, but then dropped back to the 2nd group on the road in a bunch of 7, the only person I remember was Ant Mitchell, and there we sat 40 secs or so in front of the next group and the same behind the leaders. There was only 1 attack that was neutralized until the finish. I'd forgotten how much the pace picks up for that final 2k, so that destroyed my plans of a sprint to the front finishing near the back of the group.
However I did discuover that my fitness has completely gone, so will have to do a new test to see where I am
Thanks @robbo1234biking I enjojed it even if I was pants.
P.

decent group for sure, helped drag me around, then the sprint for the line came on so suddenly I didn't even have time to deploy my feather 🙂
I managed to stay with the lead group for the first 5kms which I was happy with. I thought after 2kms that I had cooked myself and would have to drop out but thankfully the pace dropped off a little at that stage. Really enjoying the racing, thanks again Robbo for all the work organising them.
First one back this week, as usual from last series too slow off the start, then have to go too hard to get into the front group, then it seemed to settle a bit and I was surprisingly feeling ok. My drafting has not improved so I did my usual yo-yo to the front and back of the group and this showed with the wkg overall in zwift power. I got caught out at the Kom as my laptop was struggling a bit so didn't show the road properly instead I was riding on a green road, not that I'd have been able to go with the decisive break. Hung on in second group so pleased with that. @robbo1234biking many thanks as ever
Handicaps are live for next week. If your name is in red and you want to race message me and I will do you a handicap. Cheers
Race day is upon us! Don't forget if you haven't raced so far this season you wont have a handicap for tonight so if you want one you need to let me know. You are welcome to race without the handicap but you wont be included in the points.
Route tonight is Chain Chomper - 2 laps! 4 climbs of around 5-6 mins each. I expect this one to split up a lot quicker than previous weeks.
Ooooh, we do love a climb!
4 of them, you say!? Oh. Ahem....
Maybe I should spend some drops on a climbing bike & wheels, rather than relying on the Tron bike!
I'll buy a clean pair of socks to improve my climbing 🤔. I'll wear the same Jersey tho, it has given me good results.
If I get an hour's warm up before I should be ok for helping out in a small group.
May not make it in time for this one, which is annoying as climbing suits me in Zwift despite my weight disadvantage.
Oh bloody hell, i'd got this and the Thursday night TTT mixed up and was looking forward to 3 laps of wattopia flat!
Wife and I are sat here waiting on the results of lateral flow tests as we're both pretty minging so will have to see how i feel come half 7
and some dirt.... so time to invest in a gravel bike....?!
Looking at the profile I'll take it easy at the start, not involving myself in the usual start line frenzy. I'll settle into the long climb up to the mystical tree, then pedal all the way to the finish line making sure I steer and brake for the corners 😉🤣.
2nd lap will be a similar approach.
It's an interesting course for tonight - no single bike/type is best, but then swapping probably loses too much time as well so the best option is to choose something that works on road or on gravel and accept it's limitations on the other surface.
Those four climbs will certainly make the legs ache a little!
^This. Chose a bike that plays to your strengths I think.
Last one for me, on ATV so not risking a sweaty bike change with the remote.
If only Zwift would give you a hot key for a pre-arranged bike you could alternate between, with a fixed time 10 second no-moving penalty to avoid all the fumbling about and keyboard macro monkeying about. They create courses with different attributes, and bikes the same, but then make it really difficult to use them fairly and precisely.
Bonus points for a mechanic running on with it and pushing you off.
Normally I would be looking forward to tonight, but some seriously poor sleep over the past few days had left me feeling pretty demotivated! Not sure I can sum up the will!
How long should the course take roughly?
I reckon you're looking at 50-55 mins tonight.
Not sure how tonight’s going to go TBH, 6-7 mins of climbing, 4 times + a lot of catching up I think. Could be broken by the end.
Also decided to commute into office today, so there’s another 45km in the legs too. Some poor choices here 🤣
trying to get out while the weather is good so will miss tonight
jimdubleyou
Also decided to commute into office today, so there’s another 45km in the legs too. Some poor choices here
Ooof!!
I'm looking forward to it, but after Sunday Hills & a workout yesterday there's definitely some residual tiredness in the legs. Will try to get an early warm-up in to spin the legs.
I don't really like the whole swapping bike thing. You can't do it on a real ride, so it seems odd to me to do it in Zwift.
In a race, the issue with swapping bikes is losing a group & then having no chance of getting back on.
I don’t really like the whole swapping bike thing. You can’t do it on a real ride, so it seems odd to me to do it in Zwift.
Pros do it all the time and then get a push and the opportunity to draft the team car/sticky bottle! 😉
Don't bother bike swapping. Not worth it. Aero wins on the down. You wont make back the swap time on the gravel and there is a lot of tarmac to end up loosing speed on. I like this course and it's the only one I have won on recently. Sadly got covid so no racing for me.
Hope you feel better soon and get back to beating most of us in the near future!
Thanks. Going to try some easy zone 2 tomorrow and see how it goes.
Looking forward to tonight, I think. Probably play to my weakness bike wise and go for road bike for the descent/flat. Think only the 2nd part of the climb is gravel, so shouldn't lose much time overall.
Bike swapping is definitely worth it in the jungle, but not sure it is here.
I will be joining in tonight - first time on this series. Not really sure how things are going to pan out because not had much time on the bike over the last month or so, but I'll give it my best and see what happens. Not raced in Zwift since the Spring Series so the moment I have forgotten how much it hurts.
Hi gents there’s a small, update to Zwift tonight so allow a bit of extra time when logging on.
Giving it a miss tonight, feel exhausted. I'll regret it I'm sure, but can't get motivated.
Have a good one everyone!
Enjoyed that - thanks Robbo and Pau!! Yes indeed JennRide reunion! Also a bit Thurs night TTT, nice that we all are a simiular pace. One day I'll learn how to use the in game chat function while riding. Nearly caused myself to turn around when I tried today.
Going for my weekly hallucination session now 🤪.
Enjoyed the race, can't downhill tho 😭
brutal, glad hills are back. Thanks all and Robbo for organising.
@djflexure and @robbo1234biking: yep, that was....fun. I preferred dawdling around the Lakes to be honest. That was a right old dust up on the climb though. Good stuff!
Crikey, should have stayed in bed for that one! as per usual on a thursday night i'd had naff all warm up, having just got the kids in bed, done the zwift update then realised i was logged in as my wife!
I knew i was in trouble before turning a pedal so just sat in the bunch and then tried to hang on with Savoyed and Paino up the climbs on the first lap, i knew the race was going to blow apart, but that was something else, it was 15 seconds on the gravel back to Kirk,Ian and someone else? so I jumped off the bike and opened the patio doors as I was melllllttttiinnnggg. Just about managed to grab a wheel and just tried to sit in and recover as best I could for the rest of the lap. I've not really ridden on gravel since they did the MTB update so that was a bit of a shock actually experienceing it, not sure i'm a fan!
Second lap and I'd seen that Savoyed had dropped Paino and Tom Baker was about 8 seconds down on our group, I think we could all smell blood so put a bit of a push on 😀 Chasing down the last 10 seconds was hard though, I dunno if it was me or J Kirk but it was really surging and I had to keep surging back to keep on a wheel. Anyway, good sprint at the end but still not feeling 100%, although strangely better for spinning the legs over.
Cheers lads, and cheers Robbo for another interesting course!
brutal,
This
glad hills are back.
Not this.
Don’t think my legs got the memo about that one. Andeh and Southside Johnny, it was nice to have mini-group to work in but then on the final climb I couldn’t get into a rhythm and dropped back to wait for the next group. Had a good ride in with Matt Pewsey, Stumpy and M Jenneson and picked up Andeh again on the flat.
Well done to the lead groups, you flew off on the first loop and that was it.
Lost my connection with my turbo trainer roughly 18 minutes in and it would only come back for a second at a time, showing me doing 200w and 300rpm but not moving. Had to close Zwift down and restart it so didn't finish. Worked fine after that so I'm guessing something went wrong in the update I did before joining the pre-race pen.
Not the best way to end a pretty crap day but ho-hum.
Well done all, great race tonight - I really enjoyed that course!
Thanks for everyone for taking part in the series!
The results are provisional in case I have made any mistakes. Please let me know. I havent done indiviudal cat results tonight - I am too tired!

I have set up a GoFundMe for people who have enjoyed the series. This time around we are raising money for The Firefighters Charity which provides support to Firefighters and their families during tough times. This is a cause close ot my heart as my Dad has been a Firefighter for coming up to 50 years. My Dad was ill a number of years ago when I was pretty young and the charity helped by giving us a few days away as a family after spending a lot of time in hospital. They do a lot of good work for Firefighters and families supporting them through tough times.
https://www.firefighterscharity.org.uk/
@Straightliner I know what you mean about that climb, I felt like I couldn't fall into a rhythm at all, spent ages fannying with the gears and never got comfy. Eventually Southside Johnny got sick of towing me along and shot off when Dave(?) came hooning past on the gravel climb to the tree.
Out of interest, who ended up using a gravel bike?
Cheers Robbo1234biking thanks for organising, that was hard going, it took my mind of the crap football score.
Donation made, as part of my job I maintain the grounds for Royal Berkshire Fire Service.
cheers
That was dreadful for me first 15 min was OK but then my legs refused to cooperate 🙄
I did the 2nd climb on gravel bike, it was 1.5% slower but with 7% less power... (I was totally on my own by that point) bike swap lost me about 20 seconds though 😆 not an easy job on Apple TV!
I've donated my race winnings to the charity 👍
Not surprisingly I got spat out of the fast group as soon as they hit the first hill, and was happy to fall into the mini-group with @Andeh and @Straightliner rather than last week's solo effort in no-mans land.
We all seemed well matched until @Straightliner unexpectedly dropped off half way up the second climb. Soon after I saw @driley catching us like an incoming Exocet and as he shot past I tried to keep pace with him, but within a few minutes I could see that was futile. I can't imagine how he could be so quick on the second lap, after being relatively slow on the first.
That effort had dropped @Andeh and although I backed off for a while to see if he would catch up again, I eventually found myself doing the last quarter of the race solo.
As usual a painfully enjoyable experience - thanks @robbo1234biking
Thanks for the donations! Very generous and truly appreciated.
I really enjoyed that tonight. Well when I say really enjoyed it it was horrendous and I had to push super hard on the climbs but got a good result. Really enjoyed the battle with slowpuncheur and djflexure. It really ebbed and flowed and was really on the limit especially on the short sharp bits. Managed to pull out a good gap on those behind on the first climb and then slowly pulled it out as the race went on. The three of us were left for a sprint. Slowpuncheur got the better of me on the road but looks like my time was marginally faster over the timed segment and some decent sprint points.
Got and ftp increase to 306w for my efforts tonight.
Jesus Wept! That was tough.
Great group again with retrorick, v7fmp, M Jenneson, Rick M, B Clark I think and perhaps some others?! Sorry if I've forgotten anyone.
Oooh, JimW was in the blob too until we hit the climb and maybe Ant Mitchell...
Anyway. It was brutal. Even on the descent it didn't feel like there was any opportunity to rest. Every time I eased I dropped out the back and I did my usual yoyoing. Had to put some hard efforts in to stay in the blob several times, particularly on the climbs.
We caught J Jordan and then I got smashed on the final sprint by virtually the whole blob 😁.
As always thanks for sorting, Rob.
Yeh sorry scaled on the steeper or in this case sticky and steep in places climb surging is my go to once I’m already pushing my limits. Surge on and boost up the steepest bits and then a mini recovery again.
Struggled a bit after my effort to stir things up the first time up the castle.
Huge props to savo to break away and stay in front on his own, although at times it was a bit cagey in our mini group, trying to recover and get third wheel ready for the sprint. Nearly got caught out by T baker who put in a big effort and nearly caught us the second time up the castle. I’m guessing he paid the price for the effort chasing the three of us and dropped back a bit once we hit the gravel climb.
I lost patience and tried to jump scaled and paino ahead of the sprint but failed and presented a nice lead in for Scaled to pass me for second before the finish.
I'm still not entirely sure what happened in the early stages of that race. Piecing it together from reports here, I think @kirky72 started the aggression with a pretty harsh attack onto the first climb, @paino responded and then we somehow got onto the dirt climb with me, @paino and @scaled at the front (but @scaled was slowly boiling himself in his house) and not far behind were @tomnavman, @yanboss and @kirky72. Something like that anyway.
Me and @paino went over the top together, and then we spent the next half lap working pretty well to open a gap and win back some handicap. Thanks @paino. I don't know if that update beforehand changed the draft dynamics but there were times when it felt very sticky - each of us occasionally seemed to struggle to get back to the front. I really enjoyed that bit of the race, anyway, and I was disappointed when...
...@paino fell off the back the second time up the road climb, leaving me to do my longest ever solo. it hurt. I'd never have tried to keep opening that gap without @robbo1234biking and his stupid rules. Also I confused myself by somehow riding the dirt climb in exactly the same time each lap (so the sidebar didn't seem to register the 2nd time up). Then the sneaky fast guys gobbled up all the sprint points in the finale - well done @scaled, @robbo1234biking, @slowpuncheur, @andeh and @straightliner (I kind of expected that, in hindsight I shouldn't have disrupted our progress on lap 2 by trying for points there). Overall, the strategy worked today: got a gap to cover some of my handicap and there were enough KOM points on offer to cover the rest of the points gap. My favourite race so far.
Best laid plans etc etc….note to self, don’t try to keep up with @Savoyad…it’ll end in tears….and cramp.
Like that route, but with the time gaps I really needed to get some splits going early on and use the Tron to get the time up on the road. Gave it a good crack up the castle KOM to get some points and to my surprise only Savoyad came with me. And unfortunately he kept going up the next KOM where I’d intended to ease off for the next road section. The bugger never let up and by the time we got to the top of the Castle KOM on lap 2 he destroyed me. Realised I was going backwards quickly and met the motoring pair of @kirky72 and @scaled at the summit of the next climb so I could draft them on the down and hopefully not lose more time. Had zero to offer for the last 5k’s so didn’t even try to contend the sprint. Savo was an absolute beast today. Massive effort, well played!
@Robbo1234biking FTP now 308W & FWIW although me and Kirky finished at the same time, he was ahead so should move up a place on the spreadsheet
Does this mean I should like hills now?
@kirky72 those surges were brutal.
I just went for it up the hill the first lap and then hung on as long as I could. Just as the wheels were falling off @kirky72 and @scaled spotted @paino near the top of the gravel climb and suddenly I was 25 seconds back. Thanks @tomnavman for the tow to the line, sorry for wheel sucking my left calf was twinging on the verge of cramp and I was just hoping I was going to make it to the line.
@robbo1234biking FTP increase to 300W
hard work, but an enjoyable romp last night! Was counting down the hills. Fell into the trap of thinking the downhill would give some rest bite..... but not with you savages! 😀
Was a good run with Stumpy, R.M, J.Jordan, Jenneson and anyone else i forgot. Managed to bridge small gaps twice on the final climb, which hurt! Cheers all!
Best laid plans etc etc….note to self, don’t try to keep up with @Savoyad…it’ll end in tears….and cramp.
@paino I was holding and holding my sprint waiting for you to light it up after you stuck it to me the other week when I went early, and then @Kirky72 went off the front and I had oto give it everything to go with him.
Not sure if racing yesterday was the right thing to do, but i'm breathing easier today, even if i am coughing up the rainbow. Time for antoher lateral flow test i suppose!
That was hard, managed to stay with the front until it all exploded on the climb then sat in a group @ about 15th until the climb on the 2nd lap, where I slowly went backwards.
Most notible thing was afte the race, walked upstairs absolutly jibbered, and felt like I was about to faint, Jennie told me I was white as a sheet.
Not pushed myself that hard for a while. Been ordered not to next week, so obviously I'll pay no attention to that whatsoever 😉
P
Is there a race next week?
Is there a race next week?
Yeh it the Grand Finale for this series - Legends and Lava (summit finish on the volcano!).
Best 6 points finishes count so I need to work out the lowest points finishes so I can get the final results out.
Uphill finishes are my speciality 😉🤣🔥
Yeh it the Grand Finale for this series – Legends and Lava (summit finish on the volcano!).
Another damage limitation exercise for me...
Need to score 2 points or above to drop race 4.
I love a volcano finish but sadly I cant make the finale as working until 10pm.
Good luck guys.
Handicaps are live for Tuesday. I have also highlighted the lowest scoring points where people have scored in all 6 races. If those people score again this week the lowest points will be removed from final total!
Tuesday was an horrific night. I’m only just feeling human again, got a good start, was riding in a decent group around 15th/17th and then completely cracked. Not a clue what happened but I just couldn’t do anything over 180w. Hoping for better on Tuesday!
Still enjoyed it though
Sorry to be a pain @robbo1234biking, I know this series ain’t finished yet. Not been able to catch this one due to work commitments, so I was wondering when you are thinking of starting the Winter Series?
Always looked forward to taking part every week, I’ve been a bit peeved to have missed it and my fitness has taken a right hit!
I may try and join the last race if I can find a Wattbike in Newcastle.
Yep. The next series is labelled as the Xmas series 🎅 and starts the 2nd of Nov. Already planned, courses provided to Zwift and I will start the thread probably on Thursday this week once the dust has settled from Tuesday. I have consulted with a couple of people who think it might just be the hardest series to date!
Noooo! It's hard enough for me as it is 🤣
Beautiful, the hardest series when I’m at my lowest fitness, just what I need…… 😂
Nah, keep up the good work robbo, though I think I will be doing an updated ramp test for that one!
Looking forward to it already.
Hopefully be able to do a few more of next series. Still some overlap with ZRL for the first few weeks but hopefully be out to play mid series.
Think I’ve only made two races this series, and will miss again this week as I’m away.
Hoping to make every race in the next series though! Clocks back, Zwift out.
