Hello All,

This a call for the first series of the STW Racing League for Autumn 2021. My plan is to run 4 series of the Racing League.

Autumn 2021
Xmas 2021
Winter 2022
Spring 2022

The first series will run from 14th September for 6 weeks finishing just before half term so the race dates will be:

14th September
21st September
28th Setpember
5th October
12th October
19th October

Each Race series is made up of the 4 traditional categories but with a bit of a twist to give everyone a chance to compete.

1. The main handicap race – as per previous events a handicap will be applied to your finish time based on your weight and FTP and the entire group is sorted by race time plus handicap and points distributed accordingly. This is based on the best of 5 races points from the 6 races (all sprint points count towards this total).

2. The sprint jersey – Sprint points are awarded for the Top 5 finishers on a sprint section (10,6,4,2,1 points) or the fastest lap time on circuit race. The points are awarded on each sprint section on a race but only for the fastest time across that section during the whole race (i.e you may get a couple of chances to get a good time).

3. The GC race – This is based on the shortest time to complete all 6 stages and is sorted by traditional Zwift cat. The zwift cat is determined on the weight and FTP that you supply me so may not match your ZP cat as that takes historical data into account.

I am still in the process of determining the courses for the races but there will be a simiilar make up to last time with some shorter sprint races, some hilly races and some longer flatter races to give everyone a chance to shine.

I have put this thread up so that people are aware with other Zwift racing leagues starting up at the same time. In order to register you just need to PM me with your weight and FTP or post it up on this thread. I will be in touch to each person closer to the time with the links for the events. We are able to carry on our tie in with Zwift so these will be official events starting from the pen. I will mix up the bike choices but I wont keep the whole event on MTB like the previous series (again this depends on course selection, so 1 or 2 events may force MTB but others will be up to you!).

Advance notice gives you a bit of time to sharpen your racing skills!

I'm in a ZRL team this season so won't make them all. Will try to make events when I'm not needed for ZRL. Need to do an FTP test.

I’d be keen to join in if the timing was to suit. I’ve got 2 young kids so don’t normally get out to the bike until 7.30pm at the earliest. What time do you normally start the races?

Woo, it’s back!

Count me in again. I was planning to reactivate my Zwift account soon so this is perfect timing.

Pretty sure my FTP will be down but will find out in due course.

This came back around rather quickly!

Will have to sort out a bike for the turbo trainer as I sold the commuter bike I was using previously so put me down as a possible for the autumn series.

😫😫😫 I'll be watching to see how you all get on. Hopefully the old ticker gets sorted for me to join the winter or spring series.

Best of luck all.

Might not make much of the first series robbo as I really need to do a few weeks of structured something to shift a bit of weight and get some fitness back but I'll get my details over just in case.

I'll sign up, despite my first race in zwift the other day being somewhat deflating!

I can see one in the first series I'll definitely miss, but should be good for the rest as it stands. 😳

Have procured a suitable bike for the turbo now so barring work getting in the way I'm in.

Hmm, not looked at numbers for a while.

+5kg here too but can guarantee I've lost more than 10 watts! When do you need the figures robbo?

Cheer all for PMs and interest on here. I am keeping note and will be in touch closer to the kick off.

10th September should be good for weights and FTPs

@robbo thanks for sorting again, I’ll join as many as I can but definitely won’t make more than 3 or 4.

I’ll let you know on the stats near the time, weight is fluctuating and FTP isn’t what it was for the last series. I’ve tried a few short crits which normally ring every last watt out of me to keep at the pointy end of the Bs and I’ve only averaged 303w.

I’ll check again nearer the time.

I should be up for a bit of this again.

I haven't renewed by Zwift subscription yet though, it has to be really minging out before I start riding indoors...

I’m in too. Will have to dip in and out depending on shifts. Definitely heavier than previous attempts, don’t think I can face another FTP test though.

Yes, I'll be in, and probably Jack.

Given my recent performances I'll not be troubling the front this year. In a massive racing rut currently. I'm holding back on the stats for the minute as I suspect come the end of next week I'll be 2kg heavier (brothers wedding).

count me in for this slaughter fest!!

I will update FTP and weight nearer the time (hoping i have dropped back to Cat C 😛 )

A bit disappointed we arent on MTB's for all races, but i guess it spices it up a bit!

Do we need a smart trainer or would my dumb one with speed and cadence sensors be allowed?

I'm def interested again, subject to the above poster's question - I'm also still on a non-interactive trainer/speed/cadence so only zPower. I also have to move house before the end of Sept so that may intefere depending on internet/space for turbo setup.

@robbo1234biking

This would help me a lot. Absolutely dreading the onset of this Winter. This one is going to be particularly harsh.

Anyway...

Sorry if already clarified and I've missed it but what is the situation if someone has to miss a few of the races? Would that screw things up to much?

Life a bit complex here at the mo...

Thanks for info robbo.

Not going to post my weight at the moment.😟

Robbo is away on his jollies but I can answer: 1. Yes, dumb trainers are fine. It's not UCI level, it's supposed to be for fun. Just make sure it's calibrated etc. 2. Missing 1 race in the series is fine for the main competition of the handicap race as it's best 5 results from the 6 races. That would rule you out the GC though (overall time for all 6 races). Missing more than one would means you probably wouldn't be competitive for the overall but not that many people do all of them. At the end of the day, it's about racing regularly with the same people and hopefully getting a bit fitter in the process. I find a Tuesday night race breaks the week up nicely - especially during the long dark winter months.

If anyone fancies a wee tune up before this starts, my club are putting on a series starting next Tuesday, here's entry links for the first couple of races, but I won't post the next 2 as don't want to steal anyone away from the STW one!

31st August, Round 1, ITT, Bologna Out & back (16.1km) https://www.zwift.com/events/view/2261646

7th September, Round 2, Gravel, Makuri Spirit Forest, 2 laps (21.5km) https://www.zwift.com/events/view/2261636

I might join some of these races just to pootle round at the back heckling you all, seeing as I'm in no fit state to race. 😁😎

I'm going to try and do this. Right now I don't have anything that will get in the way. But there's still time for someone to **** it up for me! I'm due an FTP test so it's good motivation to see how badly my inconsistent riding has effected things.

That sounds a great idea being as I'm never in a fit state to race and often have a little break a few mins in.

[S] So I made the mistake of doing the ramp test lite. My ftp is now 191 which I'm guessing is max for that test. Should I have RTFM? [/S]

[S] (thinking about it, I might actually manage some points if Rob believes that) [/S]

New ftp is 191 Rob

Owing to my ineptitude I still need to do an ftp test for this, given the deadline is the 10th and there's no race next week...

are there any takers for some mutual suffering by way of an elastic band meetup/ftp test next Tuesday evening?

It does occur to me done as a ramp test it'll effectively be some sort of Zwift deathmatch. Possibly with actual death.

Iirc you can select a workout (eg ramp test) before you start a group ride then do the workout in the ride - I'll check with robbo tomorrow as he's done a few group workouts in the past then drop you a line to explain (or I'll post up here if there's more than two of us)

97 kg

Not ideal and I only managed 7 miles the other day before my left knee cried 'enough'.

I'm in but might miss a few.
