OK,
Got some Tesco vouchers and BC 10% off voucher burning a hole in my pocket.
Want to replace the Nobby Nics on my current FS (I find them OK as I'm no downhiller) for something a bit grippier but still roll well.
Main riding is Peaks, trail centres - more XC than downhill. No Antur/DH courses/ big jumps - so doesn't need to be a DH tyre) !
So requirement is fast'ish rolling, good all round grip.
The Nobby Nics roll very well, but do have a habit of losing grip on off camber.
Thinking of the Maxxis Agressors ? Currently slightly discounted but have vouchers that would make two tyres come out around £35. They seem more grippy than the Ardent ?
I liked mine, pretty capable rear but I'd personally still run a Minion or High Roller on the front.
its a great rear tyre for the peak as long as your not into doing all the off piste wood stuff - if you are then its not great at all in winter...
but if its mainly rocks etc type peak stuff and trail centres, I think youll struggle find a better rear tyre as a allrounder
I cant wait for it dry up a little to put the 2,5 WT version on, as its a different beast than the 2,3 ive run previous
EDIT : wouldnt dream of using one as a front tyre tho!
Im a big fan of the bontrager XR tyres, the XR4 on the front with an XR4 or 3 on the back are a good combination for that type of riding in my opinion, ad i prefer them to the aggressor i tried
Not a fan of it on the front, minion for me. Its good on the back, although would like it to have a minion side knob (& 3c compound) for a bit more side bite
Ardents fit the bill you suggest, using a wider tyre, or something more aggressive on front.
The aggressor is a bit beefier. I have a 29X2.5 to try as a front, pairing a 2.4 Ardent on the rear - but not tried it yet.
I use one on the rear for the drier months, great tyres. Got a DHR2 on now and it doesn't roll quite as well but the grip is loads better.
I personally wouldn't put one anywhere near the front of my bike 🙂
Bloody Evans aren't describing the tyres well on the web site (voucher to burn).
Looking at Dual Compound Exo TR 3C. I can probably squeeze in a 2.4.
Prefer to stick with one 'manufacturer' - doesn't do my OCD good ! Nor does different tyre names, but hey ho, I was a roadie.
I've just cancelled a tyre order.
Thread hijack...
I've got a 2.4wt DHR11 coming- was thinking of putting it on the front with an aggressor out back- question is do I go 2.3 or 2.5wt for the aggressor?
Is the 2.5wt aggressor bigger than a 2.4wt DHR11?
I personally run an Aggressor 2.3" on the front on my full sus with a Bontrager SE4 out back and think it's a great combo.
I've not had any issues with the Aggressor up front but I'm not slapping berms at Mach Chicken, nor have I ridden in anything particularly sloppy - it's been fine on rocky stuff though (Peaks, Marple, trail centres etc). I am a flyweight at ~60kg so that may work in my favour.
Is the 2.5wt aggressor bigger than a 2.4wt DHR11?
On 30mm internal rims my WT tyres measure to spec, so I'd say yes, by 2.5mm or so.
@chilled76 - I'd go for the WT version as Maxxis have increased the tread height slightly making it more capable and it now offers more grip than the narrower tyre. In fact, there's a mini grouptest going live on the site any day now where I compare the Minion DHF, DHR 2, Shorty and Aggressor.
DHR 2 up front and Aggressor out back is a great combo for all but the sloppiest conditions
I'm running an Aggressor 2.5WT on the rear - really like it. Also have used the 2.3 (rear as well), and a DHR II 2.4WT.
Aggressor seems good all round - I've found the WT better than the 2.3 in the slop - almost as much grip as the DHR II DC, but less draggy. 2.3 seemed quicker than the 2.5. I'll probably look to sell on the DHR II, I like it that much.
I'd say it was fractionally wider (as you'd expect) than the 2.4WT DHR II - apparently it uses the same carcass as the DHF 2.5WT.
My friend's just changed from a Nobby Nick to Aggressor rear - he's a big fan of it too.
Not sure I'd run an Agressor on the front (though have seen some people doing just that. They didn't die in a fiery crash, so can't be that bad. Guess it's all just personal choice).
If you want a 27.5 2.3 Aggressor with about 60-70 miles on it for £20 - drop me a line /stealthad
Cheers,
Rich
what differences do people find between the wt and 2.3?
WT has more grip and comfort at the expense of rolling resistance. It's a better tyre if you've got wide enough rims to take it
Echo all of the above. It’s a great tyre on the back, especially when combined with a minion up front.
It’s a sealed cartridge unit. How do you propose the oil is ingested?
Being forced past the seal the shaft runs through when the fork compresses fully maybe? Dunno how likely or how much you’d have to overfill and it’s been a few months since I last serviced the damper on my Pikes, the exact layout is a bit fuzzy.
The Manual does state that overfilling may damage the fork.
I could of course be confusing it with My Mattocs.
great rear tyre in the dry and in the rain too (when there wasnt much mud..) (running 2.3")
It rolls well and I was finding it great all round until i took it out for a ride in the peak a couple of weeks ago..
It could not cope with the sticky muddy top surface at all... It became clogged quickly and didnt shed.. it became pretty much unridable up hill.. wheelspin and also zero lateral grip too..! it was awful! the high roller on the front was fine..
thought id found my perfect all round rear tyre till that ride.. have ordered a high roller 2.3 to replace it and ill just put up with the extra drag..
how do people find the wt in winter conditions?
I really like it - yes it's going to slide, but at least you know it will and are expecting it when it does break out. Plus, the point when it gives out is actually much later than you'd think.
Tempted with either both Aggressors or both High Rollers. Main riding is Marple/Strines, Werneth and there isn't much claggy stuff up here - lots of sandstone. Llandegla/Gwydyr are my Wales rides, plus various bridleways near out van - got a lovely (massive) off road climb. I can't go bigger than 2.4 I don't reccon - it's only a 2014 Boardman FS Pro (which is way more capable than me down hill).
More XC as most of my training rides aren't gnarly (I've yet to get the skill since defecting from road bikes having been given a badly broken spine by a driver).
I've not had an issue the the Nics, but certainly more grip climbing wouldn't be bad, and a slightly less sketchy feeling on off camber. Sloppy mud descents do defeat the Nics.
Aggressor + rocky trails = good
Aggressor + wet grass = almost certain death
I had a couple and a Slaughter or two and found them to be fast and grippy in the Lakes. Lethal on wet grass or slop. All died from gashed, even the downhill / double down jobs...
Minions it is, DHR2 3C EXO and a DHF 3C EXO (exercises my OCD about tyres)
£45 for both with Tesco voucher and BC discount. Bargain.
