In today's FGF there is a crud catcher mudguard with a link to Amazon where you can buy it. Why is this product linked to Amazon and not a bike shop? Surly STW should be supporting bike shops over companies like Amazon.

Any particular bike shop? Or just some random one that may not more than about 3 in stock? otherwise its just a link to chainreaction / wiggle etc which is still killing off LBS's

I agree that the amazon link is a bit insensitive - should really be the manufacturers website like the other products,

@slackboy I bought mine from Merlin Cycles and it was only £1 more expensive than Amazon.

surely if you wanted a mudguard you'd just go to your LBS and buy one, who in their right mind takes any notice of sadverts?

They get a small commission from Amazon for sales made by link, not sure LBS would offer that service. You can always buy from your preferred retailer.

Yeah, I assume it's an affiliate link (haven't actually looked obvs).

Title's a bit dramatic, no?

At the moment it's whoever's got the item in stock that you want. Took me a while hunting around for the mudguards I wanted for my Roubaix and I did even try Amazon who had none. All LBS were out of stock. Ended up finding them online from a bike shop nowhere near me so technically not LBS.

I think it was probably more to do with when Andi could have it delivered by the sound of it.
That's the thing with amazon - you can get stuff dead quick.

Generally, Andi likes to run an RRP fender up front, but while he waits for the stock of those to come back in he has picked up a Crud XL Fender.

I hardly think STW is killing of the LBS - CRC/Wiggle etc. started doing that a long time ago, and lets not forget that the Germans were also a lot cheaper then your LBS......... Although BREXIT & stuff has put a bit of a block on that at the moment which may bring some trade back to the LBS's.

I just can't comprehend why anyone would take any notice of any sadvert. If you feel you need to buy something for whatever reason surely you just do your own research on that and then choose yourself which manufacturer/product you want and then choose where to buy it from.

I just can’t comprehend why anyone would take any notice of any advert.

Maybe go and work in a role where you need to get stuff sold. By relying on people just finding your company/choosing it other another to purchase from you may not be in the role for too long.
Majority of people won't need a mudguard so will ignore it, however if it gets 10% of people thinking then job done.

Thats really poor form. Not just screwing over LBS but promoting an highly unethical company

Don't worry. Advertising and marketing don't work.

My local bike shop was killed and all the police could find at the crime scene were some artisan coffee beans. Now this has been posted I’m beginning to suspect STW may have been involved somehow.

They'll need to retain a top barista if it goes to court.

I hardly think STW is killing of the LBS – CRC/Wiggle

No one forced any of us to buy online or watch YouTube vids on how to Fix/fit things.

It might be ugly, but then so might the detractors, but it's by far and away the best front mudguard I've ever used.

RRP is £29.99, are you really going to get one for that at your LBS? I doubt it's actually in stock at any of mine, so getting a 30% discount and free next day delivery from them is pretty unlikely.

It would be rather irresponsible in current times to make a trip to a bike shop to buy a mudguard. Not an essential journey in anyone’s terms...

You can order it delivered to your door, or click and collect to your LBS via Freewheel and your LBS gets a slice of the sale.

I won’t give any money to Amazon.

If only bike shops had access to the postal system or couriers.

Why's that then? They're allowed to open.

Yeah, Freewheel is a good model. I seem to remember you could nominate a LBS to receive the share, but I can't find an option to do that on their website now. Regardless, seems like a good idea.

Oh, and OP is a bit over the top.

Off topic but I’d be interested to know why my LBS wouldn’t have signed up to this?  They must have some sort of account with Madison so why not be on the Freewheel list?

That would be ideal, however it’s not a service that any of the bike shops in my area promote, in fact I have never heard of it as an option till you posted it up !

Who are also mentioned in FGF but I’m awaiting feedback from the Ministry of Ethics on this one.

Last time I tried to buy something from an LBS, the answer was ‘sure we can get that for you in a week’. I went home and got it in 24 hours off Amazon...

I'm ambivalent and of course hypocritical about Amazon.

All that said, if STW get a little kick back from Amazon, it's a compromise I can live with.

Frankly, bigger worries in the world than this at the moment.

Not linking to distributor or physical shop a bit irksome, maybe? Worth starting a thread over with a clickbait title? Definitely not.

To be honest, I think the Amazon link is there because Andi bought a mudguard from Amazon, rather than having it sent in by a distributor, which seems fair enough for that occasion. We don't normally feature products we've bought, in case folks think we're being unduly swayed by investing cash in the purchase, but these are crazy times and sometimes we have to break the rules.

TBF crud also sell their products direct ( https://www.crudproducts.com/crudcatcher_/ ) would we be complaining about a link to their page diddling poor old LBSs?

Most people can work Google, generally I'll compare a Google search to Amazon's results and buy the cheapest, my nearest bike shops are a Halfords or an Evans, whatever happens I'm more likely to be "hurting the little guy" with at least some of my buying decisions.

Edit: it's also worth noting Amazon currently want £22 for it, Crud are currently charging £35, just how keen are People to "support the underdog" ~60% more? for the same bit of plastic?

I'm not sure what you're implying.
Crud should make their cut whoever you buy it from, right? It's got their trademarked logo/brand on it...

As an upside, I now have mud guard that works nicey with a Manitou fork for £21.50.

Delivered today in the snow less than 24 hours after my beer based money squandering last night. I feel a little guilty but not that much.

Just that if it's Crud supplying them then they're presumably guilty of the same crime as STW  🙂
