There's always some-one wanting to be a gate-keeper.
I think your reply sums it up well

Where's the bloody LIKE button on that forum?
That matt_outandabout character sounds like a right troublemaker 😉
And he’s nicked your username 😜
There used to be a forum over on the Ramblers website which had a similar feel of about 2-3 super regular posters who considered themselves gatekeepers to anything and everything that went on out in the hills.
There were often threads about how the hell had *cyclists* got onto this high mountain path where they MIGHT DIE! and wouldn't someone think of the children / wildlife / mountain rescue / baby robins that might be upset at their garish presence and/or impending tragic death.
Some amount of willy waving with the user stats posted alongside each person's username on that forum. I couldn't give a shit how many hills/mountains/molehills a user has climbed.
P.S. Impressive stats MOAB 😉

I think you will find they are rookie numbers compared to others.
*doffs cap at the druidh fellow*
TBH anytime I've been riding summits and met walkers I've been greeted with a mixture of surprise and appreciation. I can't think of one negative experience.
Indeed, I have never since about 1996 had any grief on a bike in *proper* hills.
Sounds like there will be some new subscribers...good news for the mag and website. Always good to have more people with differing opinions to promote discussion. 😉

Same, in Scotland anyway, and I'm about 70 summits and probably over a hundred ascents deep. To be honest even in the Lakes people seem to be happier these days provided you aren't in a honeypot.
They’ll soil themselves when they see this month’s articles about riding in Scotland….
Post a link

I am fairly new to riding in the lakes and was warned about grumpy walkers. So far I have found people really friendly, I've had people hold gates open for us, warn us that the pub at the bottom of a descent was closed in case we were heading down for food etc. I get more grief on my local bridleways for sure.
Back to the OP - good response.
Could not resist looking.

As soon as you move more than about 500m from the car park and cafe - and especially once you're up on the fells - most people are very pleasant.
Ridden numerous footpaths in the Lakes with no issues at all.
Peak District isn't as accommodating but it's a lot busier and a lot more difficult to be somewhere genuinely remote.
Apparently we are hardcore!. (as well as loud and garish)
"" The route itself was on Singletrack, a hard-core publication's site. "
If you want to be loud and garish you have to live loud and garish,
Just read the other thread and I thought the OP was pretty reasonable. I don't think he's trying to be a gatekeeper. I think he's got a good point about the snip of the article that's on Cycling UK.
The STW piece is the classic adventure story set-up: "We picked this route because it looked BRILLIANT, and only 35km!" then the switch: "However, we got more than we bargained for...!"
Cycling UK have just given the "BRILLIANT, and only 35km!" set-up without any of the "However...!" detail, then linked to the free GPX and the paywalled article on here.
He's chimed in at the (current) end to clarify, and that honestly feels like the end of the discussion. It clearly won't be, though. Click-baity thread title on here, I say!
Edit: and at the risk of opening up a can of worms, if theres anyone who deserves accusations of acting the gamekeeper, it's the guy from cyclingUK who "moderates" King Alfred's Way discussions on fb. If it's the same guy the other OP was trying to reach about the Ben Mac article, I'm not surprised he's not getting anywhere.
I used to be against the riding of bikes on the high plateau. After discussions on here I changed my view. I still think it daft but I no longer think it wrong
as for that thread - for every ill equipped cyclist up in the mountains there are dozens of ill equipped walkers
missed the end of the edit window ^ : gamekeeper = gatekeeper
WeeDavie sounds like an absolute delight. The classic torn faced miserable walker you encounter from time to time.
Peak STW: a thread about another thread on another forum 👏👏👏

It's just a way of opening up discussion and appreciating the views of other user groups. Is linking to another forum any different to linking to other sources of information?
I cringe when I see "what causes more erosion, walkers or bikes" type comments. It's about the individual and how they walk/bike, how they get to the trail, timing and a hundred others considerations/personal decisions. A badly ridden bike can cause a lot of damage, as can feet.
From the thread...

Oh, he's fine if you agree that KAW is perfect in every single aspect.
After discussions on here I changed my view.
Who are you and what have you done with the real TJ?
🙂

He's not that bad, I've chatted with him about some bits of it and they had their reasons. E.g. going through Reading to encourage people to use it as a starting point via public transport rather than driving and parking in villages.
The slightly fanatical view that apparently run a risk of losing access to it if people ride it in <24h is a bit odd though.
The weirdest bit is others gatekeeping of it online, there's some very odd comments on the facebook group from people with presumably no connection to it other than having ridden it once trying to dictate that it's one way, seasonal, getting too busy, etc.
And at the other extreme, the ones that think it'll be a bike packing version of a trial center with arrows at every junction.
That's a very reasonable and measured thread. And consequently I'm to Pistonheads to see if someone threatens me with violence for not lovinf the XR3i.
I guess the 24 hr thing is because it makes use of some routes that aren’t prows and if it ends up lots of folk smashing through there in the middle of the night pooing in ditches etc and that sort of thing runs the risk of bringing yet more bad publicity to our sport. I guess that’s the kind of thing cuk are trying hard to dispel. Kinda like the reputation the 3 peaks challenge has.
Singletrack is about as hardcore as Country Life magazine.
Gingham me up baby!

Country Life still does page 3, STW has never been that level of top-shelf.

All least it's right to roam. They can say it's not a good idea but you're free to do it anyway.
Down south they just grumble to the land owner and up pops no cycling signs, restrictive gates or even fences banning everyone if it's not a right of way. People ranting "you're not allowed to ride here", "this is a footpath!", and out comes stickman/woman. Yet we have very tame terrain by comparison. Same arguments about damage and again it's feet and hooves that do more damage than tyres.
God forbid anyone tries to organise an official ride and countryside groups get wind of it. All the damage it will cause, tearing up the countryside, disturbing ground nesting birds or some rare insect, or badgers that suddenly have moved in! apparently.
and again it’s feet and hooves that do more damage than tyres.
And really, it's rain that actually does the damage... Feet, horses and bikes just help the rain do its job...
