Ellsworth Isis

Got to a point where I thought "When (when, not IF) I crash, it's going to hurt" so I strpiped it, sold the frame and bought GHD hair straighteners for my wife. I had also bought "the last geared inbred ever" from on-one so I put the fox forks on that and shortly after bought myself a chameleon to ride singlespeed.

Now

I had a DMR Sidekick in 2002.

I've been through a lot of bikes, but now I have an order in for a Stif Squatch.

Some similarity!

Don't think I have any photos of it, but I had one of these, must have weighed a LOT with that oversized Hi-ten steel frame!

Shortly to be replaced by the much better (although the geometry wouldnt be out of place on a gravel bike)

A full deore grouoset and Rockshox fork for £275. Those were the days!

(Neither are my photo)

In 2000 I had a Marin Hawk Hill like this (not mine, interweb photo)

I only got rid of it about five years ago, wish I'd kept it really as it could have been turned into something gravellytoureytastic

Surely we were all riding Inbreds?

Can we see Tim's Spot from issue 1 (or was it 2?)?

A Conor something or other, aluminium with a suspension fork that didn't do much and weighed a ton. I gave it to a friend in the end when I replaced it with a Specialized FSR. Sadly no photos!

Then:

A Claud Butler Cape Wrath, circa 2001 - red SR suntour forks, cable discs, deep V rims.

One of these (one of the 2 pictures I can find)

Now:

Orange E-Six

Ltd edition Strange version bought from Mountain Trax in Wokingham when they were in the garden centre. Easton Ultralite Alu frame (about 3.2lbs), Raceface turbines, XT, Hope Minis with custom Orange rotors, Manitou Mars forks, WTB rims with Hope XC hubs. An absolute blast.

Still have it in the loft (though have swapped the Manitous for some Exotic carbon forks) and keep meaning to sell as would make decent bike for someone.

This (not mine)

https://flic.kr/p/2kKap5d

‘Upgraded’ to RST Gamma TL 75mm travel forks, XT 1x9, FSA cranks, club roost bars (lime green) LX Vbrakes, Tioga factory DH 2.1s and some DMR bling.

Things have moved on somewhat since then...

Then: Azonic DS1 built with donor parts from my old Marin. It had the cheapest 100mm RockShox Judy I could find (I think it cost £80), 1x8 gears, no front brake and a sweet orange crud catcher.

Now: YT Jeffsy with grips that match the forks.

That's a real beauty, especially for a vintage FS bike.

20 years ago I was riding a 2001 Rockhopper A1, I bought it to replace a stolen 97 Rockhopper.

Today I am riding a 97 Rockhopper that was the one that was stolen. I found it on eBay and paid to get it back. A few years later I sold it to a forum member which I regretted, I then bought it back from said forum member after a year of them using it. Third time of owning this from new.

In 2001, I'd sold almost all my stuff to go travelling.

If there wasn't a global pandemic on, I'd be tempted to do the same today. Mrs Dubs might be upset about not having anywhere to live anymore, but we'd keep our bikes 🙂

20 years ago I was riding a ventana habernero ( a very hot chilli ) that I bought whilst living in Phoenix for 5 years. Now have a 29 anthem and a tarmac disc, road biking has slowly overtaken mtb’s but now that the kids are older I’m hoping that it might start to swing back the other way

Rocky Mountain Carve. Bought for $1200 from A Racers Edge in Breckinridge whilst on holiday in Colorado and Moab, and on Jacobs Ladder I think.

Then the present day bikes. Doh, they're not in the right order, sorry!

20 years ago it was a Coyote F2. Alloy main frame, carbon swing arm, and a shock where the i2i was measured in Brotosaurii. Not my pic. Mine had Psylos up front, a Thomson stem, Club Roost bars, XT , Hope Mono Mini front, Avid BB5 or 7 rear, Hope green XC front hub, DDG rear - both on red Mavis 517 and shod with a Trailraker on the back and a Fire XC Pro up front.

Now, main bike is a Hope HB160. Pic from last year, - now has a DVO Jade and a OneUp 210mm dropper shimmed to 190mm in place of the X2 and Transfer

20 years ago, I was still riding this GT LTS.
I bought in '98 and it was the first brand new bike that I bought myself.
This picture was taken after I'd ridden it home from the shop.
Soon ditched bars and bar ends for some club roost go fast risers with the brace across the top and of course the reflectors. Ended up replacing it with a Cannondale Jekyll which actually seemed to spend more time in the shop awaiting a warranty replacement frame than it ever did outdoors.

GT LTS

Now riding a Ripmo AF. So in 20 years my taste in bikes hasn't changed too much.

Ibis Ripmo AF

20 years ago I had a Scott Impulse idle in the shed as I was a gym bunny.

Two years later I got it out the shed and started commuting to work on it. A colleague mentioned her son rode mountain bikes and hung out on the Singletrack forum.

A year on I bought the Cotic Soul I still can't bear to let go.

Am I the only person whose never owned a FS bike?

🤔

Are you all better riders than you were 20yrs ago?  I expect there are others who like me are worse. I think fear of injury, shonky technique, weight gain and generally having a body that falls apart easily are the main reasons.

☹️

Had one of these as my only bike (not my photo):

The first bike I bough new. Worked at Halfords at the time so go it dirt cheap new and put plenty of upgrades on it! Marzocchi MXComp forks X-Lite bars and stem, full Deore 3x9 drivetrain, Mavic X319 rims on Hope Hubs, XT parallel push v-brake on the rear, Hope Mono Mini disc brake on the front and IRC Mythos tyres. Was in constant use for many, many adventures all the way until 2010 where it moved to commuter duties then I sold it to a neighbour in 2012. Last saw it in use in 2017 (have moved since).

It's spiritual successor is my Voodoo Hoodoo that is due a few upgrades when I replace my Trek Fuel EX soon, namely the fork and drivetrain.

The Trek is my most-used bike and due replacing due to a worn shock (no spare parts available and a stupid size)

Also have my Cotic Rocket, which pre-pandemic spent it's life hammering Windhill, Tidworth and FOD! Hasn't been used in months though.

Reluctantjumper.
Is that pic of your Trek take in The Black mountains?
Bridge looks familiar.

Yes, I grew up there so know the riding well. It's the bridge across the Grwyne Fechan stream before the long, grassy climb to the saddle between Mynydd Llysiau and Pen Trumau.

2001

Pretty sure I was riding around on one of these but with Judy XC forks having just got back into riding after playing "team sports" at Uni:

Now I'm riding this:

Similar but better in every conceivable way aside from weight and "spring".

Then, C16-R (mine was silver with orange decals and full STX-RC group)

Now

@ElShalimo there was a Sub-5 and a F700 Cannondale in between, so not all hard-tail

Back in 2001 I was riding a 1999 Specialized Hardrock Cromo, the absolute base spec that I tarted up over time. I'd still have it if some bugger hadn't stolen in in 2008.

Apparently I needed a lot of gear to get round a 30 mile ride back then:

Now I mainly ride an Evil-

and a Trek Stache, and I still strap a number plate on occassionally-

OOh, that Klein. In the whop where I bought my Claud Butler from, there was a Klein Attitude Comp in the blue with the smooth welds. I sooo wanted that.

And I know that second spot well 😀

I was riding a 1994 Kona Kilauea (as reviewed in Mtb Pro) which I still own. That summer I did ride the Berwyn's ride in edition 1 just after foot and mouth restrictions. I remember some of the farmers 'forgettng' too remove the no admittance signs. Not sure if I have any pics that far back as I was still using film - and you did not need to prove you had been out.

followed by a 92 Kona Cinder Cone

2001, I went from an Orange 02 With a few spangly bits on it (Cook Bros dog bone cranks, rental sub 130 bars, king front hub, machine tech rear hub, canal boat tiller length pace stem) to first gen Yeti ASR. Still have both, the Orange doing duties on the turbo trainer and the Yeti in the inlaws garage in Texas so I have bike to ride when we visit them.

Now, the main bikes are an 2016 Orbea Rallon and 2018 carbon Bombtrack carbon gravel bike.

2001 Dekerf team sl with fox van125 forks fitted a few months later. It was just when fox launched over here and they felt amazingly plush after rockshox judy.

2021 Orange Alpine 160, pretty old but I really like it, and it’s still a lot quicker than I am.

Back then I had an Orange/black Diamondback Sorrento with terrible forks, XT brakes, 1 Mavic rim, WTB Velociraptors and a pimping 24/7 50mm stem with Wide (690mm) Tioga riser bars. It’s still at my parents and works.

In between I had a GT Moto jump bike, Mongoose Black Diamond Triple, Commencal Meta 55 & Mini DH, Kona Howler, and an Orange Alpine.

Now I have a Calibre Line 29 bought as a stopgap while I raise young twins but will probably keep and gradually upgrade as the frame is actually really nice with a decent ride and good geometry.

2001: BSO £100 Makro special bought by my parents. I was 16 and hated bikes.

2021

And when the new frame arrives next week (fingers crossed), this in matt navy with dream build

And currently this for gravel, but new Niner RLT frame on order and new wheels in the cellar ready to move everything over

I have literally just cracked it using Google Photos! It’s my main achievement for the year!

Have written up what I did in the chat forum.

20 years ago would be 2001. That bike is still in my shed and is my older son's commuter/general use bike now. Bought in 1999 I think.

Lovely Schwinn Homegrown USA, racy geometry and light as a feather when new. Now a frame built up from odds and ends that's a little heavier but functional.

For best/bigger rides he's pinched his mum's Gary Fisher which would be 2006 vintage.

Only thing I've got older than that is a muddy fox hybrid from about 1992, that really is a banged up heap now though.

In 2001 I was riding this Specialized FSR Ground Control Comp, which still hangs on my garage wall

Now I’m riding this

And a 456c and a Giant Revolt 0, which has recently replaced my Arkose.

(Never been worried about riding pretty bikes)

I was "between mountain biking"- did it in the 90s, stopped for a long time, started again about 12 years ago. So it'd have been one of these, but really just commuting and occasional canal paths and such

https://webimg.secondhandapp.com/w-i-mgl/5ada11ed437dcd5ade9d1291 WITH FLEXSTEM!

(just idly googling and apparently it was in MBUK's top 10 bikes of the year, in 1989. ****ing flexstems though)

Still had this til about 3 years ago, commuted on it for about 2 decades then gave it away.
