If I have some hubs I really like but the rims are too big for a new bike is it worth having them rebuilt or cheaper to just get new wheels?

Depends on how much the hubs are worth I guess and how much you want to spend on new wheels.

Also depends on how much you want to spend on rims only.

Hubs are Silver Hope Pro4 on WTBi 40 rims. Think they’ll be too wide for using on the bike I’m getting. Probably looking at 2.4 to 2.6 tyres. The latter might be okay but I don’t think the former would work.

Bike I’m getting comes with Alex rims on Formula hubs.

it look s like the erd of an i30 is within 1mm of the i40

buy them then tape them to your wheel and move the spokes across 1 by 1

easy.

Then true up...

harder but not hard

With my cack handed skills that could go spectacularly wrong. If I decide to do it I shall film it!

This, then take them to a decent shop/ mechanic to be tightened and trued.

Thanks all. If I end up splitting the bike I might give the taping and moving a go

The thing about trying to build/true them yourself is that at the absolute worst you can still throw it at a shop. The actual assembly isn't quite foolproof even with the tape method but if you're careful it's simple. Truing and tensioning is easier than you'd think, especially if you've ever retrued a well used wheel- it's easier to tension a new, straight rim from scratch, than it is to fight an old bent one.

Having said that, they're not especially gucci or expensive hubs, and presumably you can get them new still?

I think they’re pretty expensive tbh. Although I think I’ll try and sell as a wheelset if the bike they’re on doesn’t sell. Keep the wheels on the new bike until I’ve saved enough to replace them. Might even have a go at building my own
