Ok - I'm new to this UST malarky and have UST rims on my bike. Do I have to buy UST tyres or will any tyre work?
I'm assuming I need sealant in there anyway - but just wondered whether my tyre choice was restricted or not.
Thanks.
UST tyres will usually seal easiest and have more durable/beefy sidewalls.
Regular tyres can work too but it's a bit hit and miss and they are moer vulnerable.
Def use sealant.
Complete pot luck based on rim and tyre, ply etc. Tubless ready and toobliss will obviously work. Most dualy ply maxxis ime have worked fine too.
Thanks Al.
I was looking for mud tyres for the weekend but there seems to be stuff all choice in tubeless. I may need to risk it.....
I've had cheap contis work well, an NBX and a Swamp thing too.
Some door frame sealant in teh well of teh rim helps provide the intial seal you need...
Bonty Mud-X will be fine.
UST rim with a UST tyre isn't supposed to need sealant, but it's better with it. Just doesn't need it to seal the bead. I prefer UST tyres as the sidewalls are stronger.
(Just getting over very basic presumption, that you want to run tubeless - standard tyres will work with tubes.)
If the wheels are UST, then you can use UST or some of the Tubeless Ready variation (Bontrager Mud-X, Schwalbe, Specialised, etc - you'll need a sealant for this type, but it's also recommended/good idea as a backup to run with a true UST setup).
Running non tubeless/-ready tyres aka Ghetto needs more info (search on forum to pitfalls, methods and suitable tyre/rim combinations)
If you haven't tried to run tubeless these wheels before as tubeless, make sure that they are a true UST and don't require either additional specific rim strips or valves - make sure you order these before changing tyres & flying out the door on a ride/trip.
Bonty Mud-X great choice as TLR (Tubeless Ready) tyre & remember pressures can be run a few PSI lower aswell (to paraphrase a post earlier this week - tyre should feel like you were squeezing an orange rather than an apple).
Spesh storm control toobliss or maxxis medusa ust.
They are proper UST wheels - so it does sound like I've got some options as long as I do a bit of research and use sealant.
I was looking at Panaracer Fire Mud tyres as I've used these before and really got on with them. I know I could just take the valve adaptor out and shove a tube in but I'd rather run tubeless if possible.
I've got some Stan's flow that I run with normal single ply high rollers. Does the job fine.
Lots of UST tyres (Maxxis, Kenda) state you musn't use sealant and it voids the warranty.

Depends a bit on the sealant, but I had a large egg-shape lump come up on the side of a Maxxis UST tyre which I blame on Slime sealant delaminating the tyre, I think the Notubes stuff is OK though - at least, not had any problems so far...
Definitely use sealant, though - it won't completely eliminate punctures, but you'll really have to slam the wheels onto the square edge of a rock, or slash the tyres to have a problem.
