thinking of buying a second hand frame to build up for my daughter. It has a tapered headset, but the forks i have are straight. Could it be as simple as getting a different size bearing for the lower race, or does the whole headset need changing? Bike is a cannondale chase.
You can usually get a crown race that takes up the space. My DJ bike has straight steerer forks, but a tapered headtube. It came with a thicker crown race to take up the slack.
I have this on my hardtail. You use the normal tapered bearings in the headset inserts and use a wider crown-race sat on the forks. Works Components certainly sell (or used to) the headset adapters
here you go
Well that was better than the previous crown race question.
Or you can get an adapter that will allow you to fit the existing crown race to your forks eg. https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/mobile/hope-tapered-1-5-headset-reducer-crown/rp-prod71609#
