Like many of you i'm considering dropping my Big Ring as it is rarely used. This is just for tinkering reasons as much as anything else....however this may be a stupid question.
Will I need to shorten / use shorter chainring bolts/nuts? Or will I need spacers? I ask as i don't intend to put a bash quard on. Well not initially anyway...
Shorter chainring bolts or spacers will be needed
you may have to use something for the chainring bolts. They tend to be made to fully support two rings, one ring means they will bind just before they go tight. So could bodge it with spacers/washers etc. you could buy some shorter chainring bolts, or you could cut what you have a bit shorter.
Without the chainring there's a mm or two less depth for the existing bolts, so you'll probably need shorter bolts, or use washers as spacers.
It might be easiest just to suck it and see. Only takes 5 minutes to take the big ring off and check.
