eep

This bolt refuses to unbolt itself from the shock axle. It's from a Cotic Rocket Max.

I've tried penetrating oil, soft grips on a vise, heating the shiny bit, sharp on/off with an impact driver and it's still stuck fast. Anyone got any pearls of wisdom they'd like to offer up? Maybe I'm being daft here 😒

Full Fat coke and soak overnight.

If that doesn't work other options that are likely more of a pita than it's worth vs buying new...
proper caustic soda, carefully.
Assuming it's open at the other end and you want it out/rid drill it from the opposite end with a bit about half the size of the bolt.

On the gen 4 flaremax only one side threads into the 'axle'. It's a bolt with a thread on the other end to accept the short bolt on the other side.

It's a long bolt and a short bolt, not an axle which is threaded on both sides. Well it is on the flaremax anyway but they look different (rounded silver bolt heads).

It’ll be threadlocked on. Heat should soften the glue. How hot did you get it?

Although one has to ask why you actually want to remove it? As you’ve proved, you only need one of the bolts out to remove the axle from the frame. I can’t actually see a reason to separate the second one from the axle.

That's what I was going to ask Jon.

Just looked on the cotic site and it does appear to be a different design to the ones on mine. Unless I just didn't notice. I never thought it might be an axle with two separate bolts.

I've had it off before, so it's definitely possible to remove.

Essentially, I did all the bearings a week or so ago, then popped it back together. Realised yesterday that although the bolts were tight, they still span freely (rear mount) as they weren't pinching against the shock. Took it apart, assuming I'd lost a spacer: everything is in place, but actually the little washer/cone things are subtly different for the front and back mounting. The back one has a little machined hole for the axle to sit in, whereas the front doesn't. I'd got one for the front, on the back, meaning it wouldn't pinch up. Sounds trivial, but apparently it makes a difference. Now I've got the front washer thing stuck on the back one, so need to swap it.

Anyway, I'll try some coke overnight, etc 😬 any more top-tips?

I'd order a new one but I'm in Canada and it'll take a month to arrive 🙄

Be careful with coke. You could rot the aluminium electrolytically away pretty rapidly as you’ll have two dissimilar metals and an electrolyte.

plusgas, heat, more plusgas over a day or two, then wrap it in an old inner tube and clamp it in a vice and apply your wrath. Or perhaps just buy a new one from Si?

Ah ha! Got the ****er!

As advised: some coke, liberal heating, liberal impact driver. Amazing it was so suck as it's quite a short screw!

So, word of caution, watch out with older (2018?) Cotic shock hardware.

Cheers everyone

The joys of bike companies coming up with their own stupid way of attaching a shock just to be different instead of just a simple bloody bolt you just slide through and tighten up.

Ah least everyone uses metric shocks now so we don't have a million and one different eye to eye with identical strokes or vice versa and no 0.5mm increments in stroke, only regular 5mm ones. And best of all, we don't get a 60mm coil that only fits 60mm stroke shocks with an eye to eye above or below a certain size, because that was really annoying.

I'm really really glad they made that change because it was such a mess before.
