You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
18 months after realising my Thompson Seat Post was stuck in my titanium Jones I've been worried about removing it from the frame.
I've tried a mallet/hammer and a "fast release penetrant" spray but nothing.
I didn't want to cut my £80 seat post down and drill/cut out the lower part but especially I didn't want to damage the titanium frame.
So, today I bit the bullet and with every finger crossed I took my bike over to John "The Seatpost Man" at his base near Rivington.
Of course John doesn't want anyone to know his unique way that he removes every type of seat post from carbon, aluminium, steel or titanium frames, so I left it with him and went to see some customers nearby.
2 hours later I got the phone call to come and collect my bike as it was ready.
The good news is that John got the seatpost out and both the frame and post wear 100% as good as new, so saving me not only £80 on a new seatpost but many frustrating hours trying to dig out a perfectly good Thompson seatpost.
£59.99 of money well spent
And Copper slip used when re fitting the post tonight
Wonder what uses.....?
his real name is bruce banner.
Interesting. From the photo it looks like the post came out vertically with seemingly no rotation.
Compressed air?
I wish I'd charged that much for every seatpost I've removed from 20+ year old mountain bikes, I'd have a Ti frame as well!
Any experienced RetroBiker can remove any stuck seatpost or BB without damage.... 😉
Looks like a good service though he provided, glad its been saved.
Ton was about to skip this lovely Surly frame as the BB was rusted in very very tight - not even swinging on a 2m long bar with all his weight did it unscrew.....

This was my worst one. 20 year old Kona frame, well rusted in seatpost ALL THE WAY DOWN. 🙁

The drivetrain looked like this, so you can imagine how much rust was around the whole bike and how much it had been neglected (stored outside!).

It did come out though, bit by bit....

The original seatpost could be used but we bought a nice shiny black one instead as we needed a longer one. I still have the original as a spare!
Go on then RobDob, what's the sciencey bit? Race face XY stuck in a Bontrager Race frame waiting for salvation!
Frankly I'd not use a seatpost or frame that had been separated without knowing the process involved as I'd be concerned they'd been weakened in some way.
John Lee dad built the BMX track at Chorley for him where I misspent my youth - remember him building the "camel"
Glad to see he is still in the cycle business
He was handy on his BMX bike back in the day FWIW
