My Joplin post is jammed into a steel frame. It wont budge and is currently in my kitchen with a healthy dose of WD40 hopefully working its way down the seat tube.

Any other ideas? Obviously I cant apply too much rotational force to the seat post, or the bushings and block in the seat post will give way probably.

I also cant easily apply force up and down because the seat post is sprung.

I'm at a bit of a loss and need the post out for a trip away on wednesday. Any ideas?

cheers

One of those boa strap wrenches or a few layers of inner tube round it and a pipe wrench?

Could try undoing the collar and moving out the way up the post. Block of wood on the lip of the outer tube and a mallet - knock it in to break the seal?

good ideas, I'll try the second one first and make a note to myself to get one of those wrenches, it's not the first time I could have used one.

I've used the coca-cola trick to great effect on 'normal' seat posts in the past:

Strip the bike to the bare frame. Heaset out, BB out, everything.

Turn the bike upside down and tape up all exposed holes (but not the ones by the BB). Pay particular attention to the holes inside the head tube.

Suspend/suport the frame so that the seat tube is at 90 degrees to the horizontal with the BB at the top. Now, pour coca-cola into the frame through the BB shell. Keep pouring until you can see the level of the coke by the BB shell. This is the only way you have of proving that the coke has covered the end of the seat post.

Leave to soak for a couple of days. Check it peridoically and top up the level of coke as required.

Empty the coke out (this is very messy) and now attempt to release the seat post. It *should* release with very little effort. I also make no guarantee as to the state of the internals of your seat post when you have done this.

Haha. Not sure what neat coke will do the bottom end of a Joplin, but worth a go. Currently it's upside down, BB removed, with a healthy amount of WD40 squirted into the seat tube. I reckon I can add some coke via a plastic hose without having to remove the headset etc

cheers

I think the issue is if the coke gets along the sides of the seatpost it will then enter the top-tube and then along into your headset.

Leave it outside overnight then boiling water over the seat tube in the morning. Gotta be worth a try?

Heat the seat tube with a hair dryer the thin walled steel will expand faster than the Alu within.

The coke is the best bet... it's some kind of chemical electro madness which means alu and steel get too possessive with one another, but the phosphoric acid in the coke will free things up, with the bonus of treating any rust.
