I am cycling St Malo to Nice and with 150 miles to go my Hope PF 46 BB drive side bearing has completely collapsed.  I took the crank out and there was just bits of metal and a few bearings.

I spoke with Hope France and they can't help and I need to be in Nice by Saturday at 1300 hrs.

Does anyone know whether I can get the BB out without the tool as my only shot is to see whether a shop could put another brand in it.

Totally p!ssed off as I'm stuck in Oraison  and no idea what to do.

@mikenewsmith - the Hope PF adaptors require a special tool  http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/hope-pf41-bottom-bracket-installation-tool/rp-prod147501

Then you can get to the bearing. In the same way that HTII BBs need to be off the bike to get to the bearing.

Scratched - didn't realise it was an internal BB.

cups are fitted sans bearing so it should be removable and replacable without tools in the field - not ideal to do so

would be a bit bodgy to bash it out with a hammer and a punch but in your situation id give it ago if i thought it would help.

S71806 is the bearing size i believe which is a 30 x 42 x 7 if you feel like explaining that to a french bearing shop?

failing hat see if a shop in the uk will ship one ASAP >?

By the look of that tool a good shop with a selection of bearing pullers could get at that

You can knock the bearings out with a punch and hammer.

You need an approximately 25mm hex to remove the bolt in centre tube, the corners are rounded on the tool, I cant remember if that is important for the fit or not

Looks like the tool to get out the threaded tube that joins the non-drive side cup to the drive side cup is pretty specialist. A bike shop with a good selection of bits and bobs could probably bodge something that would get it out though. After that you can just whack in a replacement bb if you can find one the right size for your axle.

Is that not for the 30mm spindle BBs? They do 24mm ID bearings for the PF 46 24

If its a 30mm you need a 31mm hex if you want to remove the centre tube.

Some freehweel/cassette tools might work on the 25mm if you put it in backwards, might require light dressing.

I am near Paris and have the Hope tool, but that's a long way.

Looks like you need a 31mm hex. How about a pair of M31 nuts locked on to a suitable bolt and a spanner.

Inspired by this:  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hex-Tool-Hope-PF41-PF46-Press-Fit-Bottom-Brackets-Allen-Key-31mm-25mm-/132629856491?var=

Call Hope 01282 851400 and see if they will mail you a tool out directly that you will return when you get back - you can only ask.....

Cheers for the replies.  This is why proprietary stuff sucks.  I'd have gone Shimano, but wanted the 46/30 c/set that Rotor do and Shimano haven't got such an offering.

Rant over.

When I took the c/set out it looked like the centre tube was obscuring the bearing flange so wouldn't be able to knock it out with a hammer and punch.

if the center tube is obscuring the flange for removing the bearing

how does one get a 31mm/25 mm  hex through a 30mm/24mm  axle hole to remove the centre tube.

bearing has to come out without the centre tube being removed surely .

the pf41 had some cut outs to get dritts in to remove the bearing - is the 46 the same ?

The centre tube is fitted before the non drive side bearing is installed.

Indeed.

Which is why I'm asking about how you remove it without removing the bearing first.

Of course you now have no inner race in your drive side bearing so it won't be coming out even if you get it out the frame. Bike shop with a dremil perhaps ?

I suspect you have to first remove the non drive side bearing with a puller?

Spoke with Hope France and the Manosque shop don't have the tool or bearing in stock and he said next week.

Trail rat : Good idea a dremil might be the best option, but the inner face of the bearing cup looks pretty trashed too.

In a bind you can use two suitably sized allen keys to remove the centre tube by placing one in and then using the other as a wedge, I've used this technique to remove quite stubborn radiator tails when I didn't have the right size hex key.

Super happy!  A Belgium guy at camp offered to take me to a bike shop 15km away.  The French mechanic took out the crank and shook his head.  Upon realising it needed a special tool he confidently gets to work with his dremmel tool.  I come back 30 minutes later and bike is ready to go.

I could have hugged the chap.  I thought my trip was finished.

I'm writing each day on my blog if you are bored and fancy a read.
