Help, just tried to remove the chain device on a bike I bought second hand. 2 out of three bolts came of as normal but the third has no hex left inside. Allen key just spins . How can I remove?
Had self same problem a while back, get a slightly bigger bit(a torx bit off a screwdriver set worked for me) that you're prepared to sacrifice, give it a wee knock in with a hammer and it should undo...nb I'm taking no responsibility if your frame falls apart during the process mentioned above!
Counter sunks can be a pain, but not impossible,
as with any bolt the thing that holds it in is the preasure between the thread and the head as they are trying to pull away from each other.
easiest thing to do is carefully drill the head of the bolt so that the chain guide comes off the frame. make sure there is still some of the bolt sticking out.
then use some mole grips or pliers to remove the loose thread as there will no longer be pressure on it.
Bolt removed
I used a pair of Irwin vice grips. Not surprised the hex Center was stripped away. The outer top of the bolt has deformed like it was made of wax. Slowly turned and now bolt free. The bolt was from a black spire stinger.
