I am trying to change from 1x9 to 2x9 by using a triple front mech. I don't seem to have space between the rear tyre and the mech. Can anyone help - it is an LX triple bottom pull.

Thanks

Is the lower limit screw set right ? Also, the outer cage should clear the outer ring only by a few mm IIRC.

I haven't managed to set the screw yet as I cannot get it to fit onto the seatpost. I have a dual pull mech and it is worse!

Set the limit screw right in before you install it then back it off. Clearance is tight on most 29ers but sometimes you can solve it with a different mech.

What size tyre do you have in the back? I found a 2.25 ardent about as big as I could run with a triple mech

I'm on 2x10 on my swift ans have done 2x9. both work fine but I did find that I had to set the ebb at its highest position to get the (double specific) front mech to clear the chainstay with a 32t chainring. no tyre clearance issues but I'm on 2.1s.

I am running a 2.4 Ardent and I wondered if that was the problem as it sits quite high on the rim. Rocketdog - I wondered why the chain wouldn't stretch!

CX-70 cyclocross mech is a bit lower profile but I don't know if it will be compatible with your choice of shifter.

2.4 ardent will definitely foul the front mech, too big if you're running gears on a swift ime

Hmm, no suggestions ... but if it helps I'm running a 2.4 Conti Mountain King (v1) with an XT M781 on my Swift (3 * 10 setup), and the clearance is good.

Actually, "bottom pull" ... but is it a top swing mech, or a bottom swing (a low-clamp or a high clamp?). It shouldn't really make much difference, but I've found that I've had less clearance with a top swing/low clamp than with a 'conventional' bottom-swing/high clamp mech. YMMV I guess?

If all else fails I've found the vanilla Deore f-mech (M5nn) fits/works with almost anything, equally happy pulling both ways, loads of adjustment range and just seems to keep going for ever...
