I could kick myself sometimes. If I was a super hero, this would be my special power; stripping threads!

And yet I never learn.

The nut still goes on. But it's become impossible to get the cup and cone right. At least without a great deal of frustration. And then I wonder if it's just going to work itself undone 50 miles from home...

But neither do I want to splash out on a new hub just to rectify another one of my stupid mistakes.

What are my options?

Yours Frustrated.

p.s. I do potentially have spares. Just not the same ones.

Just buy a new axle.
Or ask nicely on here...

If it was stripped you couldn't tighten it.

Sounds like the hub isn't right or you're skills aren't.

Just buy a new axle.

That was my first reaction. Until I seen axles cost more than the hubs they sit inside.

Like I say, I have spares. I'd rather not use them because they'll then render the wheels they sit inside useless and they're waiting for my singlespeed shopper project to go ahead.

And I don't know if they'll take to the cup and cone properly. (Sometimes I'm a bit OCD once I start thinking about things!)

I also need guided back to sanity. A slightly poorly axle has me thinking of DIY wheel builds...

It was a handbuilt wheel from Merlin. It was perfect. I stripped it. Popped it back together. Perfect still.

Got a bit over-excited, noticed nut turning a little more than it should. Sinking feeling in stomach. Try to loosen. It doesn't like that. Nut is suddenly very stubborn in all directions. Remove nut....my black threads now have a newly created shiny surface.

They're not terrible. I could get it 'kinda' tight. I reckon it'll hold. But it'll be in the back of my mind too.

Slightly off the main topic, but a HUGE help with Shimano cup & cones, locktite the cones and locknut on the side you can't access so easily (so drive side on the rear, and the front depends upon whether you are disc or not). At least now (for the life of the cones) you only ever have to fiddle on one side, and you'll be cured of the dreaded magic untightening cone/locknut disease.

Butcher I MAY be able to help you out. I will have to get in the loft to check. I think I have a Shimano hub that has totally pitted and worn out cones, but as far as I know there is nothing wrong with the axle.

Give me till over the weekend to see if I can dig it out.

Loctite on the drive side is king.

OP, was it the locknut that stripped the thread or was it the cone? If the latter I would say you could try reversing the axle so that the stripped thread is on the other side of the hub, as the driveside/non-driveside cones sometimes sit in different places on the axle. You may get lucky!

I've found a couple more spare wheels, and I dare say the axles will be OK? They're quite old (late 90s), but they've all got to be pretty much the same surely?

It's the front. As it happens I have a spare rear hub, which I got for the freehub. Brand new. Sods law.

For £3, something like this probably has the same axle thread...

It's quite amazing the prices CRC sell stuff for sometimes. I'll see what the ones I have are like first. But that looks like it might be worth a punt.

Not all front axles are the same, i'm guessing yours has plain/unthreaded ends where they fit into the dropouts as this type seem to be very easily stripped compared to fully threaded types. Sod's law dictates that your spare hubs will be different 🙁

Won't matter if the thread goes all the way to te end or not
The price of genuine ones may inc all the cones etc
Should not cost more than a few pounds to get a new non shimano one
