The drive side thread on my Cove Stiffee has stripped out. No cross threading or hamfistedness - the HTII BB cup appears to have come loose (god knows how?) and then me not noticing and carrying on pedalling appears to have worn down the threads?

Its gonna be off to BETD for an insert to cure it but while searching for info on who could fix it I found this thread: http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/bottom-bracket-thread-stripped

It seems I am not the only person this has happened to? Same bike too! Is this just coincidence or are there more cases?

It does happen but it's not very common.

I have a prophet that this 'seems' to have happened to, bought 2nd hand, after I changed the chainrings the BB on the drive side managed to work itself out. I partially blamed the low thread on the Hope BB, but the previous owner may have ****ed it up some-how for all I know.
Had a LBS face the BB and run a tool through the thread, and fit a shimano BB with taller threads - seem ok but I'm scared to touch the damned thing, even now when it's creaking (need greasing).

Would be interest in feed back on Betd's service, as I love this frame.

BETD is 45 quid ( + 30 if you want both sides doing). I'll be stripping it down this weekend and sending it off next week. I'll let you know how I get on?

Happened to a mates Gary Fisher Big Sur. He was ss'd at the time and he is a big bloke, not fat, big. He is a bit fanatical about keeping his bike in tip top condition. We wondered if he was putting so much power through the bb that it started to weaken.

Race Face DH BB's(Diablous I think) have very long threads, and while the BB's are not as good as Hope's they will still work with a stripped thread.

Get your lbs to face and chase 1st though so you make the most of what is left.

Sorry for the lack of feedback - been in Morzine all last week! Bike came back the day before we went.

BETD turned it round in a week. Looks like the job is a good one but I've not re-built the bike yet due to the afore mentioned holiday....
