Brief story - got back into riding last year after 8ish years off. My 26" hardtail was getting a bit creaky so got lured into the world of a full suss 29-er. For what I ride, this was a mistake. I know this now, I have regrets. Winter lockdown project had me building a more modern hardtail, which I thoroughly enjoyed building and am loving riding. I just wish I'd built a 29-er as it turns out I really like how bigger hoops ride. More regrets.
So I decided I wanted a nice 29er hardtail. Initially started looking to source parts until this eureka moment where I realised I might be an idiot. I've got a Fox Rhythm / Shimano SLX 7100 equipped Canyon Neuron 7 which I was planning on selling when the rear shock comes back from warranty... would I be better off selling that whole or stripping the brakes/drivetrain/forks off that to build my hardtail?
Genuinely in two minds here. On the one hand it would make the hardtail build something I can crack on with while we are in bit of a global parts shortage situation but at the same time I don't want to end up even more out of pocket by splitting it up.
Halp?
<third attempt, after waiting and refreshing etc...>
.
Parts are hard to come by at the moment.
Quickest and easiest way is to strip it and build a hard tail.
List the bike at the price you want but also say you will sell the frame and forks for a price.
Then sell what ever offer comes first
Yep - parts are going for silly money at the moment. Downside: the market for second hand frames seems a little soft, to say the least - possibly because parts are in such short supply. I sold a dropper post and a hardtail frame on ebay last week; far more people watching and bidding on the 3ish year old dropper than the (single) bidder on the three-ish year old frame, which went for the listing price rather than what was probably was worth. (The buyer, by the way, seemed to agree, but an auction is an auction, and he got a bargain.)
So: you may struggle to buy parts for a 29er hardtail in the first place, or buy a whole bike at this point, for that matter. At this point, you may want to have a bike you can actually ride, rather than a slightly vague delivery date for parts. Maybe move stuff across from the Neuron (which is a pretty tidy frame, by the way) and see how you go. Assuming you're not chopping lumps off the steerer tube, for example, you can always put the Neuron back together again and sell it on if it's not selling as a frame only at the price you want. Of course, that also may mean you're in to two bikes' worth of parts in that case...
Strip it for parts.
Stripping a bike always gets you more cash for it, but takes time and more risk packing and sending off parts.
I'd buy the hardtail frame you want and build up with the best parts from the 3 bikes you have.
Then maybe keep back one or two spares of easily damaged / worn bits like rear mechs, chains and BBs and flog the rest on an ebay £1 listing weekend.
Usually the best way is a stealth add on here.
Come on, put full details up, size, condition, price and a few photos.
Thanks folks, by and large all pointing towards me not being an idiot for thinking about stripping/using the parts I have. The more I have thought about it the more sense it makes.

Agree, posting individual bits is a ballache. Although since royal mail started doing collections is it certainly less of a ballache. The bits off the canyon are pretty much the best parts of all the bikes so will pretty much strip that back to the frame then decide what to do with the left over stuffs.

Pretty much it. I wasn't planning an SLX build for the hardtail but since I already have it I may as well use it. Gives me scope to either buy the bits I actually want over time or realise that the bike I've built is still way more capable that me (It will be). I'll be picking up a new wheelset down the line anyway because a lot of weight lives in the Canyon ones.

Not selling anything yet! Although when I do I suspect the Sonder Transmitter frame, DVO Diamond forks and Stans Arch S1 wheels will fetch me the most (Stealthy enough?). I'll be listing stuff in classifieds here when the time is right.
