Has the Strava Route Builder gone insane for anyone else?
Some main roads now not working as routing options at all and where once it would automatically choose a fairly sensible route out of town it now wants to go via the heavily used MTB area to get anywhere. Routing also via some heavily used roads which I want to bypass.
Ha! I noticed this also, no real logic or consistency to the routes it wants to take.
Tried Garmin (which I find really awkward at the best of times) and it's doing the same thing, except Garmin has obviously decided I'm a vampire now and won't let me cross any bridges.
Do they share a common 'engine' e.g. google mapping or something?
Yeah same here for the route I tried to plan on Saturday night. Gave up in the end
What was a very easy to use, although there were issues with it which were minor, is now utterly unusable. That'll lose them my subscription if it's not fixed.
Didn't realise Garmin had the option. Yeah it's borked too.
Mapmyride is currently fine but doesn't appear to have a manual mode to skip over missing sections of trail.
Does Manual Mode not work?
Edit: And I've just created a course in Garmin Connect that crossed bridges AND allowed a "freehand" section in the middle.
Weird. It won't let me create a route along the main street through the village or in fact along any A road. Looks like someone's updated the underlying mapping and added a tag to major roads to say they are not suitable for bikes (or runners) and Strava, etc. have just picked it up.
Manual works but is a PITA to use other than to get over minor issues. The auto routing feature is generally about 95% spot on with only minor adjustments of extra points. To draw it out manually for use on a Garmin is a non starter.
Strava bizarrely was the best route generator I've found. You can save routes (albeit in a crude manor, which is my main complaint once you get over 20 routes saved) autoroute and manual as necessary. Not found anything else which could do it all so far. Worked pretty well for on and off road. Obviously an OS overlay would have been perfect...

I can do A roads but not the A9.
Ah, I had this issue the other day, but because I wasn't that familiar with the road I wondered if perhaps it was one-way!
Wanted to travel north from South Harting, through Rogate to head towards Rake... Strava Route Builder will not go through the Rogate crossroads, crossing the A472 onto North St.
Yes it's not all A roads. Just some sections. Ie the main road onto the NYMoors for me.
Mind you I can now make a route on a short section of road that I used to have to put a small manual section in. SO you know you win some and lose some.
If I want to travel east or west out of my town I now get auto routed south offroad into the moors over a massive climb. Maybe it's only for gravel riders now?
Yeah, it's a shame as it almost seems like they've made it too clever for it's own good, it deliberately avoids bits of road (multiple roundabouts, A-roads) that I'd frankly rather not be riding anyway, but need to use for the sake of making a coherent route.
Tried 'running' mode but of course that requires forensic attention to detail to make sure it doesn't drag you off road etc. Gets a bit tiresome when trying to plan long distance routes.
Maybe time to dig out the old touring maps and little wheely distance-ometer thing...
Anyone used Komoot yet?
Wonder if it just uses the same programming/source files as Google/Strava/Garmin...
I mostly use Garmin Basecamp as it has lots of editing tools and can use a selection of maps, including OS and OSM. The GPX-building world has been a bit topsy-turvy recently since Google started charging. You'll likely have noticed that a few sites have had to switch tom something else/

Ooh do they work with Garmins ;0)
Good shout on Mapmyride, forgot how useful it was!
I used to use the segment explorer in the iOS app when out on the trails but that no longer shows your location! Must have been a botched update somewhere!
Komoot = Clumsy you have to click to make a waypoint then move the mouse to click again to confirm that it's a waypoint. Manual works though.
Not gone any further as it fails on the above for useability so don't know if I can save multiple routes and export to Garmin or not.
I actually went out with an OS map in a waterproof bag on Saturday evening, felt like a propper adventure having to pull it out my jersey pocket to read by torch light despite it being "normal" 10-15 years ago! 50miles of cycle paths, road and bridleways, no forward planning (other than a load of annotations of the map) and a vague idea I wanted to ride Grims Ditch.
I only ever really use google, but that seems to have updated recently to show the difference between a paved path (solid green line) and (dashed green line) unless it's something else but that seems to correlate with what's on my commute. It still misses the busy road out though despite it having a decent enough cyclepath on the pavement, so it's not perfect.
I'm still running the old OS memory map system. Full countrywide coverage at 1:50,000,1:25,000 and 1:10,000.
Creating routes is a doddle, save as GPX and use wherever I fancy. Pity it has been "upgraded" - the new OS digital stuff is not a ptach on it.
I use gpsies.com to create routes. Great Britain Topo Maps (android app) to view on ride. Small fee for topo maps full function possibly. Also used Mapometer but that now charges & it's best function was to move start/finish really easy and display elevation better. It still does this but the free map is duff. Strava/endomondo to record & pinkbike/trailforks for track spotting!
Wow they've fixed it already!
Well switched it off and on again.
Back to how it was and long may it stay that way.
OS overlay would be ace and making the manual waypoint add less clunky but I can live with that. More importantly would be a decent way to file and sort routes.
